I took the XM on it's first test drive today. It went very well indeed. :D

I had to tighten the hydraulic pump belt, and the accelerator pedal was all wrong ...it was almost on the floor! Anyway, a quick tweak and then took it for a drive. It went well, got it up to 70, all the gears changed smoothly. Happy. :)

Got back, checked the gearbox fluid level. Strangely it doesn't show a good level on the dipstick with the engine idling. But when stone cold the level is halfway up on the 80 degree level. I think it needs more.... So far 4 litres has gone in.

It's been washed this afternoon, so I can see out of it now, always a good thing.

So we will see what happens. I still think the hydractive spheres need changing. The ride is a bit lumpy. So I might have to do that soon. The front brake pads I found are not brilliant. By that I mean they are missing those little locating pips. So they squeal when they have warmed up. They will need changing at some point. But they have loads of meat on them, so not too critical.

Next little job is to lower the hot idle setting. Will do that next week some time. It's not to high, only need to lower by a few hundred revs.

Very pleased so far.

That is a good achievement. There'll always be some tweeking here and there after such a job.
I know a good place to have all spheres recharged. It's a sin to drive XM's with half empty (or worse) spheres. :)

If you have no pips on the front brake pads you will quickly be in trouble.
The parking brake auto-adjust will have no resistance stop so will keep winding up until the brakes bind on.
Pads with pips must go piston side.
XM front pad sets must have pips on at least two of the four pads.
Genuine Citroen pads have pips on all four pads.
If you were sold a pad set with no pips then you were sold a PUG 605 pad set not an XM one.

Hi John,

I didn't buy them, they came with the car when I bought it. I only noticed the pads as the hub on the passenger side had to be taken off for the lower ball joint. On reassembly I noticed no pips. That's interesting what you say. I will have to change those then.

On other things... Still adding more ATF. I must be up to 5 and a half litres. I bought more. Got a level now showing on the dipstick finally.

ATF... Finally sorted. I think it swallowed nearly 6 litres in the end.

Not surprising. The total capacity, including the TC, is 7.5 litres.

When you think about it, it isn't a surprise no. I was quite amazed at how much more I drained off the other day.

Can someone refresh my memory... It is rather fuzzy these days! I need to change the fuel pipes or pipe from the tank to the metal pipes under the back. It's still drawing in air somewhere and it's got to be the only place it's leaking in air.
I need to know the size, is it the same as the feed pipes in the engine bay?
Stupid question I know, just want to make sure I buy the right size and that Citroen haven't done something odd like fitting a different sized pipe.

Been tinkering again today, trying to iron out some niggles. Belts have been tightened. I tried to lower the hot idle, but it seems to have barely made a difference, but then I didn't go mad adjusting the screw on the pump. It idles at 1000rpm on hot. Bit too high.
It's still drawing in air which is effecting the starting from cold. This is interesting as the engine when in the other car, used to start so quickly after it's pump rebuild, and now it isn't, means there is a fault on the tank end feed. I inspected the fuel tank pipes and they look as though they have never been touched. Ever. I found moisture around the main feed pipe and on top of the sender unit. I expect they really do need replacing, simply due to age. I have put a new clip on it to see if that makes any difference in the meantime. Doubt it will, but you have to try the most simplest ideas first.

The hydraulics are painfully slow to rise when it's all cold. So I bled it again and did some Citrobatics. It's getting quicker to react to the change in height. But I think it needs more.

As for the boost control device, that needs adjusting. It's boosting too much I think. Especially on the motorway. Trial and error on that one I think.

Otherwise it seems to be okay. For now!

Nothing like a bit of drama. :D The top coolant feed hose to the header tank split this afternoon. So I had to do emergency repairs in the train station car park... With an audience watching on! Triple layer of insulation and dingy tape did the job till I got home. I already have the replacement pipe ready to on. :)

Thank goodness I had all my tools, coolant and that tape in the boot. 8-)

On the plus side, the ride is much better after that bleeding yesterday.
