Also is there some technique to putting the pan back on? Its either hitting the subframe or the flywheel

They look like spare parts that were dropped into the cam box by someone. Are the strips metal, or rubber?

The sump should just wiggle back on, but try lifting the engine a bit. Is it a steel, or alloy sump; the alloy sump will be more awkward to install due to the thicker flange.

They're plastic, previous owner had the top off so I wouldn't be surprised if he dropped some bits down, oil was clean though so none of it did any damage at least! Id put money on him taking th pan off tho as it was only held on with silicone too 😂

I think it's the alloy one, I did try to jack the engine up but it barely moved it, might undo that rear mount to see if it'll tilt it better as it's gotta come off anyway

Well spent another 3 hours tonight fettling with the oil pan and got it wedged in but still not quite there, got irritated and headbutted it out of anger and it suddenly popped into place! Not the most conventional method I'll admit but it did the job so I won't complain! And can happily confirm it no longer leaks oil!

While under the car I did notice this bit was also weaping lhm, what part would this be? Image

Per the thread viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10291, that would be a height corrector.

Before condemning the unit itself, check the leak off return rubber pipe isn't split.

Don't be too worried if it needs a rebuild. I've just done a front one on my XM (brand new to the hydropnematic world) and it was a breeze.

Just be sure to have an 8mm flare nut spanner to hand for getting the pipes off. They will need a good hard pull to get them out of the unit itself. I'd also recommend picking up some pipe seals as well. Rebuild kits are available on Chevronics website for 20 ish quid, the parts are the same going all the way back to the DS!

Good luck!

Clean it up with some degreaser to determine the location of the leak before pulling it apart. In the photo it looks like engine oil has blown back onto the height corrector.

There is A LOT of over spray of oil in the engine bay, I think it's due to the previous owner sticking the top end of the engine back together with silicone instead of gaskets

I haven't had the chance to check yet unfortunately, it's been bloody Cold and wet, I did sort my exhaust rattle today and swapped the central locking box which unfortunately doesn't respond to the key
I plugged it it and I head the central locking go, so it definitely acknowledged it, swapped the battery in the keys so the little red light goes when I click the button but the central locking doesn't respond to the button on the key
