Okay somehow got that off and these fell into the sump? What are they?
Also is there some technique to putting the pan back on? Its either hitting the subframe or the flywheel

They look like spare parts that were dropped into the cam box by someone. Are the strips metal, or rubber?
The sump should just wiggle back on, but try lifting the engine a bit. Is it a steel, or alloy sump; the alloy sump will be more awkward to install due to the thicker flange.

They're plastic, previous owner had the top off so I wouldn't be surprised if he dropped some bits down, oil was clean though so none of it did any damage at least! Id put money on him taking th pan off tho as it was only held on with silicone too
I think it's the alloy one, I did try to jack the engine up but it barely moved it, might undo that rear mount to see if it'll tilt it better as it's gotta come off anyway

Well spent another 3 hours tonight fettling with the oil pan and got it wedged in but still not quite there, got irritated and headbutted it out of anger and it suddenly popped into place! Not the most conventional method I'll admit but it did the job so I won't complain! And can happily confirm it no longer leaks oil!
While under the car I did notice this bit was also weaping lhm, what part would this be?

Per the thread
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10291, that would be a height corrector.
Before condemning the unit itself, check the leak off return rubber pipe isn't split.
