Hypothetical spares cache

Post by xantia_v6 » Sat May 25, 2013 7:42 pm

Following on from viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4809, lets say I have a nice XM that I would like to keep for 10 years, and I have £250 available now to buy spares.

What should be on my shopping list?

Having an es9 engine, a bubble-breaker and half a dozen inlet manifold gaskets must be on the list, and maybe a crank damper pulley...

Suggestions? Feel free to suggest parts for other engine variants for the benefit of others.

That's a good start Mike, add to that an ignition coil...

I suppose that front strut return hoses, abs sensors, lower arm bushes and 288mm brake disks should be added to the list.

Oh yes, most definitely, especially the latter as they're used only by the S2 V6 and 2.5TD I believe...

I can't see parts not being available if one looks. Just buy them as you need them and maintain the car int eh meantime.

Only the last few of the 2.5's got the bigger front brake disks.
Only ever seen one 2.5 fitted with them, most are the standard 283's.
So the 288 five bolt disks are real low user.
To be into spares stockpiling your have to be pretty committed long term to the car(s).
I would prefer not to have a car stuck off the road while I search for the possibly expensive required spares.
You only have to look at WHM spares prices to see where the game will go in the next few years.
Bit of a dissadvantage to be haggling for rare bits you particularly need.
