I believe there are 3 trigger areas on the track which are roughly 120 degrees apart, i think, i can check tomorrow.

That is correct Dean there three sections of slots with wider solid blocks between and many thanks also for your further comments Chris. I now attach a photo of the original sensor damaged by the loose flex plate with an untouched sensor for comparison. As you will see there is some quite deep scoring of the adjacent plastic and that was with a minor imbalance, rather than a completely free floating starter ring! Obviously I should have changed the sensor before but the condition did not look that bad at the time. Regards, Matthew T.

That means three long pulses per engine rev, interspersed with a much higher frequency from all those small holes/spokes. A lot different from the older 'single peg' sensing. At 5000rpm, those small pulses are coming thick and fast!

Well the problem is not the flywheel sensor as fitting the replacement made no difference at all, while the original has only very minimal wear. When I rev up the engine it just feel like it is being 'strangled', although start up and tick-over are good. I realize that both poor spark and fueling can give this effect, which I guess makes it difficult to pinpoint the cause. My inclination is to assume an electrical fault and I still wonder whether the flickering interior lights may be connected? Regards, Matthew T.

If there is a bad earth for the engine ECU this will do very horrible things but just reving the engine with no load isnt a big load on the electrical system or fueling.

If it runs smoothly at all speeds with no missing but wont rev it does sound like a lack of air flow.

I take it you have driven the car and it just has no go but is otherwise fine?

I can't see ignition having a strangling feeling on the engine, mising or cutting out - yes, but not holding back.

The issue is fuel related.

agreed, so what controls fueling?
MAP, air temp, water temp, throttle position, O2 sensor...........

Many thanks for your further suggestions chaps and I have now found the cause, which ironically was electrical and spark related through worn and dirty contacts on the dizzy and rotor arm! I should really have thought of checking sooner as I have had several experiences of poor running and non-starting from this issue. Perhaps it is time to fit electronic ignition!! The car went back on the road today to replace the Scotland XM and I enjoyed a good blast through the lanes! All feels well with both the engine and box and the ride is also quite nice and long may it continue! As the engine was out yet again I took the opportunity to change the steering rack heat shield that I was fairly sure was vibrating at higher revs due to a missing bracket and that irritation thankfully has now gone. Just briefly this afternoon I had three cars on the road and I could not resist some photos! Regards, Matthew T.
