Green 1993 XM on Ebay

Selling off one (or bits :o) of your XM collection, or perhaps searching for those elusive headlight washer covers? This is the place to do it.

Hi George,
Although you can buy AA membership at the roadside, I'm pretty sure they don't include relay. You would have to get membership prior to your journey (I think membership with relay is around £100 now).
Even then I think they would refuse you relay on an untaxed, unMOT'd car.
It would be quite obvious to them what you are doing.
Personally I wouldn't risk it.
Have you considered van or trailer hire?
Oh, and you'll need a stack of yellow pages to cover all the areas between Poole and Glasgow
Anyway, best of luck, hope you get the car, it looks like a bargain at the moment.
Paul

Hi Paul and Peter

thanks for info

yes, have thought of van/trailer but I'm finding it difficult to find firms that hire them nationally (after an initial googling attempt).

Wondering what's normally done in those cases, hire from Glasgow and drive all the way down and back, or hire from Poole where the car is? I found online 2-3 nationally operating firms were u can set different point of pick up and point of return of van, but in practice they return "no availability for your dates" etc. -seems they are not *so* developed in practice. Any info welcome.

I think on Monday I'll ask my indy if he knows any firms in Glasgow and see how's the cost of the operation looking like.

cheers

Hi Folks

I'm back, I was the third viewer today, some people were just driving off in a Volvo estate when I arrived and they had been preceded by a club member no less :o from Birmingham I think so I have no doubt you will be getting another report shortly.

The car

The damage to the bonnet is consistent with it having run under the back of a lorry or something but its not terminal, two longish grooves but it still fits OK. The interior condition is consistent with the mileage, leather and aircon, looks very nice. I didn't drive it on the road as its not street legal but the clutch and gearbox seem ok, the engine sounds nice with no sign of head gasket leakage and it does have antifreeze in it although not very strong. The hydraulics are pretty responsive but it needs a new set of spheres as you would expect.

Overall I think is a very nice car and worth the trouble of transporting, even my wife liked it. :o Lets wait and hear what our other member has to say, if he says it awful it means he wants it :D

Hi Peter

thanks for the report, sounds positive, what about the dent in the sill, looks a big and tricky one from the photos, would this repair anyhow, or is it "leave as" ?

cheers

Do You know, I forgot to look at that  I was so surprised with the lack of serious damage on the bonnet that it went clean out of my head. Sorry.

Boy! I've just looked it again and the bidding has shot up. The additional photo's were not there when I last looked, I reckon that dent will pull out, but I didn' notice it when I was looking round so it cant be that prominent - or it could be my eyesight of course. :?

I asked the seller about the sill dent, he says it has surface rust only. To that end I'd be inclined to paint it and treat the inside with rust preventative then leave it.
The only way to pull it out would be to drill it or weld a threaded bar on then pull it out. Both of those methods would ruin the galvanising.
I also asked about strut tops...he didn't know what they are....Peter, any information on these, and what's it like underneath?

Sorry, I didn't look at those either but I had a look round under the bonnet and if they had been bad I'm sure I would have noticed. There was no serious rust anywhere I could see, and at that mileage I would be surprised if there was any. The car is obviously going to need car some work but it has the makings of a very nice vehicle.
