Red 2.5 - Low Miles
Have you seen this one? Mileage looks suspiciously low
so wonder if any of you know this car? John? Have to go to Stoke-on-Trent on Monday so might try and look at it on the way home.

I would examine the car before you a bid anywhere near the BIN price.
I did consider the buy-it-now briefly when I first saw it last night.
Decided against mainly as it was a VSX not an Exclusive.
The listed faults are minor but those a hands on enthusiast would have fixed in the first year.
Someone who does not do their own maintenance may prove to have a "rosy tinted" opinion of condition.
If so it will not be deliberate, just from not being aware of actual state.
I would want to know why it had only been used for 9 months then laid up.
I would check the MOT length and previous usage history for annual mileage.
As I read the advert the current owner selected and bought the car on service history.
It may be that this plus the matching appearance of the car and MOT were enough.
In my view this is not the same as a thorough mechanical examination.
In my opinion if the car matches up when you view it then the BIN price was not excessive for a low mileage example.
It will be roughly 30% cheaper on fuel to run than your V6.

Wise words all round and will report back accordingly if I do get to see it tomorrow. 30% cheaper on fuel than my V6 is very tempting, mind you!

30% better minimum! I'm doing 50mpg from mine now and lowest average so far has been around 44mpg moving a lot of heavy kit around on short trips

50mpg??? You must be extremely light-footed.
Ours is 32-34 urban and low-gear mountain work, and 37-40 on high-speed motorway runs.
These figs used to be 2mpg lower when the EGR was in operation.

I'm not too heavy and I still have my egr connected but that video was after almost all motorway run to hull.
I'll do one tomorrow of my current journey which is half motorway half a road and often involving m6 crawling traffic coming home most days, but that's about 1-2mpg less for an average speed around 35-40mph...

For heavy consumption there is the Range Rover I can use, it's Diesel engine can do 33-35mpg if I'm really really gentle but generally around 27mpg on with motorway use and 22mpg if used around town at all.
Then there is the jeep.... 4.7 v8... It can do 26mpg on a run but on a trip recently did just over 9mpg for a few days before the run home which saw it at around 22mpg which I put down more to roadworks and having to use non V-power or tesco momentum fuel which I use as much as possible.
The 2.5 does get a weekly ragging for about 2miles before I get home as well, really clears it out when you first boot it and I use cruise a lot as well as keeping be revs under 2000rpm as the engine is lazy it doesn't need high revs at all
30mph in 5th and just tickling the throttle gets it to slowly pickup and move along if it goes from a 30 to a 40/50/60/national zone.
One simple motto rules for me, if your important enough people will wait for you. I have no need to rush anywhere these days

You have the wrong XM, if you want to drive like that get a 2.1, stick to the slow lane and watch the lorries pass you.
Why conserve cheap fuel. Much slower and the Veg will turn to lard its so long in the tank.

Beg isn't in the tank more than 2weeks John
old used stuff could turn to lard but I only get new stuff donut doesn't go off and add a small amount of treatment mix when it gets colder to ease the gelling affects. The filter inlet pipe runs across the top of the rad so is out of the airflow and gets reasonably warm as the engine doesn't take long to get upto temp.
If I went for a 2.1 id have a right faff trying to get one with cruise control that works as easily and reliably as the 2.5's does and would miss the low end grunt so would likely end up using more fuel.
Once the belts on it are done later this year I'll be getting a heated filter housing for it and some new glow plugs as I'm sure at least one is dying.
I conserve the fuel as what's the point in rushing about and wasting it in a mile munching car? It would mean I'd have to fill it up more often which kind of defeats the purpose of a mile muncher to me as they should consume very little of your time outside of driving them
