A most excellent road trip to Anglesey yesterday and fantastic to see you Paul
We went there and back in Chris's 2.5 Estate to collect and ES9 engine and HP20 gearbox. So easy with the estate. Engine and 'box fitted in without even having to drop the rear seats..
The 2.5 was an absolutely lovely ride and a great place to be in on a long trip..
It was a round trip of around 500 miles running on 100% veg all the way...
We also met Will (kingp) in a motorway services for an exchange of spares..
Chris's 2.5 is badly in need of a new clutch and it needed a little care and nursing yesterday. We plan to do the clutch next week.. That'll be an experience I'm sure!

It can be done without taking the engine and box out I believe but is a bit diddly as space is so restricted.
Whilst there it may be worth doing the balancer belt and the water pump as you'll surely be removing a lot from that side of the engine ...

Sometimes Will, it's easier and less profanity inducing to just lift engine and 'box right out to do the job... That's our planned approach at the moment...
It is the believed the cambelts and waterpump has been done relatively recently...

Balancer belt and water pump are at opposite ends of the engine.
Balancer belt is inside the cam belt, light duty item in service so usually let run through to second cam belt change every 150k.
Belt is a bit unique with teeth both sides, hard to find and expensive.
If you are going in that end of the engine the main crank pulley wheel is worth careful examination of the security of metalastic ring.
Paint 3 or 4 thin radial white lines on the outer face of the pulley wheel before putting it back.
Makes it easy to check the state of the pulley regularly while in service.
Water pump has its own drive belt on the gearbox end of the engine.
Two different versions of the water pump, belt and pulleys for the 2.5TD.
Early 2.5's set up used 4PK belts while post 1996 it changed to 3PK.
Bits cannot be mixed, you change the lot or replace like for like for single items.

Hi kingp
Learning the oddities of a 2.5 is well worth the effort.
If you wait and let them catch you out it can be a very frustrating and expensive experience.
Makes it a very good match with the rest of an XM.

John, thanks for all the info. Much appreciated...
Will, yours looks very tidy for a hack!
Chris and I are looking forward to getting stuck in to this jib. I can feel it's going to be an experience

Hi Jim
Make sure you have something ready to retain the hydraulic clutch push rod in its ram.
Also put a block under the clutch pedal.
Its not like the later hydraulic clutch.
Totally closed circuit, there are no bleed or fill points and a real pain to sort if you pop the push rod.
Do not fit the release bearing to the clutch plate as it MUST be assembled loose from the clutch plate.
It is fitted with a special tool through the clutch cylinder hole when engine, box and clutch are all back together.
Done the other way and the operating arm will not pick up the thrust bearing.
