I woke the XM up from its rest yesterday for a general check-over. The good news is that it's mostly OK. The bad news is that it needs a new oxygen sensor but the really bad news is the exhaust has holed again near the transverse box.
It's been fixed there a few times in the past with welded patches but this time it looks a bit terminal...
I'm not at all sure what to do for the moment as whatever I do is going to be horribly expensive and the piggy bank holding the playing with cars funds is looking distinctly anorexic...
The XM may now rest for much longer than planned as a result although if any 25th anniversary events are being staged I'm sure it can make a guest appearance there..

Thought you still have those small inexpensive stainless steel exhaust shops in the UK. Where exactly is it corroded, I wonder. Curious as I own the same model which is going to be fitted with a new cat converter soon! I have a spare rear silencer, but not a transverse one.

Jim if you want to do a temp fix and it's too big for just a gun gum repair try this.
Clean a baked bean tin out very well and cut the bottom off it and clean the label off.
Form the tin to the shape and size required and test fit it.
Clean the mating surface on the back box and rough it up with some sandpaper.
When it's as perfect as can be run a thick layer of gun gum around the edge of the tin and the hole on the box as well.
Get a wire coat hanger and straighten it out.
Cut the hanger so that you have 3 lengths to go round the box and the tin repair leaving an extra inch of wire. Use anther coat hanger if needed.
Apply the patch and run the wires round and use some mole grips or pliers to twist the two ends together and then fold it over. Repeat this for the remaining pieces of coat hanger wire.
Start and let the engine idle for 30mins while doing other stuff and then it should be sealed.
You all may laugh but this has served me and my dad well over the years. The notable one being the bx about a year after we got it got a hole in the mid section pipe. This repair last a fair few years and onto it's new owner when sold on.
Cheap and reliable.

Sorry to hear that Jim.

Blame the Vauxhall and its bad influences

With regards to 25th celebrations, I think Mark is 'on to it' so to speak

A full 'cat back' stainless steel exhaust system for my BX was £300 fully inc. I wouldn't imagine an XM system being much more expensive. I had mine built/fitted at MiJ performance.
