I think after the duff info already, is it a diesel...is it a petrol.... it might be best just to go and see for yourself with an open mind. But if it is cranking over, then surely it can't be completely dead.

Early petrols did indeed have a keypad, but if it isn't there then it hasn't got one.

Early petrol 4 cylinder engines CERTAINLY DID NOT have a Key Pad!! Im suprised you didn't know that Will!!

ONLY the 3 litre V6 initially had the Key pad, so theres NO immobilser problem.

Pull a plug out, rest it on the head with the plug lead attached and spin the engine to check for spark If theres no spark, either Coil OR Ignition AMP on top of the back of the distributer..

Mine did. It was an early car with red badge steering wheel.

IIRC, very early cars didn't, slightly later ones did.

I dont think the badge colour had any bearing on that..

But out of interest, my first XM, a Black 2.oi Base model did NOT have a keypad, Im sure Eddie Nuffs doesn;t have one and his is a G plate 2.0i S trim, and this is a G plater car in subject and one cant be found.

One of the added features on V6 cars over 4 pots was the key pad. Ive seen G reg V6s with Keypads.

Key pads were a slightly later addition for the UK market. The badges were red on early cars, black on slightly later ones onwards.

Why??? It will only run on three cylinders Malc...Dont be a woose .. Its not like a diesel injector which sprays..

ANYWAY whats the issue, the car wont start anyway.. so theres NO problem!
