Re: Vince's 2.1td xm - let the work begin
Impressive initiatives, truly. And good thinking, cleaning everything and looking at treating and preventing number one enemy; rust!
Those wiper arms are similar to the xantia's and they perished on me in Ireland. Had to drill holes through the plastic top covers and insert bolts into them, to keep the arms attached and working. Bit of grease might prevent that from having that happening too soon. Other than dryer climates!

Eddie had his painted down one side, for a very good price.
The term you are looking for Vince is it having a patina of age.

Something I find rather appealing in a car...Dieselman wrote: The term you are looking for Vince is it having a patina of age.
All of mine have it to a greater degree...

Very true. The most expensive classics selling are the un restored examples.

I think your car is lovely Vince, certainly very impressed when i saw it at cxm last year, i know there was the paint issue on the drivers side but thats more the sort of thing the owner notices and frets over and nobody else see's.
I think you have done a great job on her, are you still enjoying xm ownership?

Re: Vince's 2.1td xm - let the work begin
I am Dean yes
Well the work continues on the xm....yesterday I got quite a lot done. As planned I tackled the OSF wheel arch area. Took the liners out and discovered a bit of rust. nothing too dramatic but it looked a bit tatty in there. I also found some more mysterious wiring (this car has loads) which has been clipped off and just left in place behind the liner. Anyway...with the liners out, this is what I was left with: (this is the side where I discovered the inner cv boot had split recently.

So, the plan was/is to clean up any rough areas on the car and protect them for the future. I removed the rust of everything with a combination of wire brushes and rust remover, then have stone guarded all the panel work and visible parts of the subframe, smooth hammerited the caliper and satin blacked everything else. I cleaned everything painted the silver bits silver to again protect again corrosion. No one is going to see this stuff as it sits behind the arch liners, but for me I know its protected and for an future owners of the car it gives them a record of what work has been done to it.
One for Paul this.....Paul you know I was saying I had an noise on the auxiliary drive, and you mentioned that Alan's has a similar problem...Well mine turns out its on the crank pulley. I had a good listen with the area stripped back, and ran the engine. Noise started and was quite loud with the covers off. Then doused the Inner section of the pulley with wd40 type stuff and it all went quiet again....A job for the future I think
Anyway...today I will be refitting the degreased and renovated arch liners to finish off the job, but for now this is how the renovated arch area looks like.

The original plan was to repaint the panel sections silver, but to be honest I dont see the point. You don't see them anyway. Im dreading the passenger side arch. I think it has a fair whack of corrosion behind there....just call it a hunch
I might pick up some fibreglass filler before stripping that back, I don't have a welder or any steel to make any plate sections if needed.
Fingers crossed its not too bad
