Acc cable help please....

Post by Vince » Wed Dec 26, 2012 3:05 pm

Ha ha, just had a right laugh then....nipped to Tesco with Jack and Linda then the accelerator cable decided to snap on the narrow road out of their carpark

I flipped the bonnet to find the cable slack, but the pedal was down to the floor anyway so its obvious its goosed. After a few seconds of thought i figured the only thing to do was to drive the 2 miles or so home on tickover revs and 1st 2nd and 3rd gears :)

It took a while and probably didnt do the clutch much good, but i made it home and even managed to reverse it up the drive :)

If anyone asks why torque is more useful than all out horsepower then here lies the answer ;)

I can see GSF still do them 712PC0030 as i still have the link to the branch system in my favourites :P at least until they realise my log on details are still active and shut me down. Ill ring the swinton store tomorrow and see if they have one in to deliver out to me as a favour...in the meantime, are they easy to change? I dont have a haynes manual and havent done one before ;)

Hi Vince ..

yes it is a ball ache.. the cable comes through a groomet that's tucked right under the drivers sphere.. in the corner.. remove the drivers side sphere and you will see a large rubber guide gromet it also takes some thing else too cant remember what now..

There's a similar R type clip that's a fiddle to remove that holds the cable in the correct position at the throttle... it comes through right ahead of the TOP of the throttle pedal up behind the dash almost like a xantia clutch clip..

all fun and games...

If Vince the spheres are recent then lower the car fully to the ground... then release the pressure regulator.. there's a chance if they were fitted by someone who knows they will only be hand tight and come away in your hand .. ive had a few like that before now..

A strap wrench or a few taps with a hammer will usually get spheres off.

Yes it is on the regulator bolted to the gearbox.. but its a 12mm head not an 11.. undo it one turn with the engine running and you should get a pressure release hissss .. its best to get the front up on some ramps and get at it from underneath on the xm..
