220 pounds a year for that lot, it is not fair.

Anyway, as xantia drivers among us, do you all hate that bloody windscreenwashersystem or not Mine, I have had to fix so many times. The plastic hose gets brittle and had got broken many times. Many hoses later it broke again recently and I couldn't get at it, without dismantling the right wing. I fixed it again with putting a smaller pipe inside, coming from my old welding machine. Whatever you call it that leads the gas wire. It's working again, for now. Not great, but good enough. I will have to remind myself, never to open the bonnet again, ever!

I think I am going to buy myself a derelict address with a postbox in the North, it would pay for all those taxes and insurances!

Not really sure what bit you mean. Ive had no issues with washers other then blocking jets on Xantias..

XM ones have been reliable for me...

All this talk of insurance is interesting. What companies do you all use for Classic insurance, and what age do they need to be?
I was told from next year mine might be eligible for classic car insurance.

Also great tips on short term insurance. Might be very useful in the future.

Yesterday I got a Practrical classics mag, nearly forgot this months edition ...there was an alarming story in it.
Apparently if you take you car to have an MOT.... and it still has a week or so left on the old MOT..... If the car fails, your insurance is automatically void until it passes again. Regardless if you still have a legal MOT for the next week. So that means, if you fail the MOT and drive home, as you are legally allowed to do, you won't be insured. When on earth did they sneak that in. Ruddy Insurance companies taking the P*$^! More to the point, how do they know?

Well Thats CRAP!

Hence why they encourage you to go for an MOT up to a month in advance so if it fails, you still have one vaild while the works done..

Jeeesus it gets worse! Its almost not worth being interested in cars at all!

RE: 24v Insurance. I went to "Performance Direct" IIRC for mine..

I know. I couldn't believe it. The law clearly states you are entitled to take your MOT early and drive it about until it is out weather it fails or not. This country is SO anti car

Cheers Paul for the tip. Performance however is not what an SED Auto is all about But I'll give it a try next time my insurance is up for renewal. Mind you I paid £227 full comp last time.

Peter, Im going there now to have a look, but how does that work for Taxing a car???

Mine is already taxed but as you can print out the certificate it shouldn't be to difficult, apparantly it should be on the national register in two hours so you can tax online.

And if a car is Taxed with no isurance thats NOW an offence, so if the insurance is removed the TAX is supposed to be cashed in...

Incredible info, so now I am glad I am on the other side of the Irish sea again. Having said that, I should check if similar laws have come in here as well. So the UK is O.T.T as well. Are you sure about this? I thought that is only the case if your MOT man deems the car too dangerous to drive? It's unbelievable to know that every car that fails the test, will have to be brought to a garage by recovery truck?

Also, it is LEGAL in Ireland to fail your driving test, and drive home in your own car, insured and all. Now that, I find, mind boggling too:)

I think there is a little trap here.
Insurance can be cancelled to the minute on any chosen day.
Tax and SORN can only be cancelled or taken out by the month.
If you cancel your insurance on the 1st of the month and declare SORN then the SORN will come into force on the 1st of the next month.
So almost a month with no insurance and no SORN.
Just have to hope PO or DVLA do not loose the paperwork.

Insuring SORN cars to take them to MOT was costing me agro and cash each time.
Then the company I was with decided to withdraw from providing short term cover, no notice, just a refusal to provide that cover.
With the MOT booked that wound me up a bit.
Found a multicar policy that lets me insure everything.
All the SORN cars are now insured full time.
Not cheap but break even point in a fairly expensive location is 3 to 4 cars individually on the raod.
Each declared car has its own policy and individual no claims bonus.
