Can I reinforce my noob status by asking: what is the FDV and what is its function?

Re: Vince's 2.1td xm .... the winter fix up
Ok, I'm a noob- but I'd echo Will's comments- my XM rises to full service position without revving. Occasionally in the morning I may use a bit of throttle to speed up raising it if it is in low and has been left for a couple of days, but it doesn't need to be done.
Can I reinforce my noob status by asking: what is the FDV and what is its function?

Re: Vince's 2.1td xm .... the winter fix up
Lol, you may, the FDV is a Flow Distribution Valve, fluid is drawn from the tank to the pump, the pump then send lhm at high pressure to the pressure regulator (thing on the front of the engine with the sphere on) this then regulates the pressure to between 145-170bar, the fluid is then sent to the FDV which regulates pressure to the steering and sends fluid to where its needed in order of priority, basicaly it makes sure that the brakes and suspension are seperated from the steering, the steering being a big user of fluid by volume it could starve the rest of the systems, ie your brakes without the fdv doing its thing.
This is specific to 'sinkers' only, later hydraulic citroens had a '6-2 pump' this pump is one unit but is split in two internaly, with 6 pistons dedicated to the steering only with its own pressure regulator built into the pump while the other two pistons pump to the suspension and brakes via a traditional external Pressure regulator.

Re: Vince's 2.1td xm .... the winter fix up
Well work soldiers on.....
Tonight saw the sunroof motor removed from its mountings and the holes pumped with silicone before re fitting. I am not convinced that the water ingress is coming from those holes, and i suspect the front drain holes may be blocked. The problem i have is i managed to get the sunroof tilted open using the manual crank, but the mechanism it pretty worn it seems. The gear wheel doesnt grip the track very well as if the teeth are worn. The problem this causes is no access to the front drain holes. Ill have a think about this one....sounds like the arch liners need to come out to access them from below, hopefully some working with a long piece of wire will work, failing that an air line blown up them may clear any blockages. I dont mind that approach TBH as it allows me then to clean and waterproof the inner wings and no doubt discover a bit of rust? Either way, i dont like areas of cars that are hidden as thats where trouble starts usually.
Fingers crossed the leak will have stopped with the work done tonight.....if not then its plan B.
Other fantastic news is a "new" FDV will be fitted friday morning curing the LHM leak ive had since day 1. You will all hate me for this but ive been given an old GSF stock one still bagged up with seals from our old Citroen product manager at head office. He rescued it from the bin some time ago when they deleted the line as he knew what they were worth and just stashed it in his drawer.....he doesnt need it so he has donated it to my worthy project

To top that...i supply Paris Autos each day from the shop and have done some work on Paul's xm in the past, favours for favours so to speak, so he has volunteered to fit it for nothing for me on friday

I told you you'd hate me
Its nice to cop a break every now and then...
So the project xm rolls on....
Next year i am hoping to be making some decent money on the side (nothing illegal)......that pending i will continue on with working through every aspect of the car to restore it back to former glory

Id like to get the wheel trims refurbed before christmas...but with the price of kids stuff nowadays and the mounting christmas costs its more likely to be in the new year.
Keep motoring people....and thanks to Paul this evening for telling me where the manual crank handle lives for the sunroof.....honestly you'd never find it there ever unless you knew it was there
neat hiding place though...proves alot of thought went into all aspects of these cars

Re: Vince's 2.1td xm .... the winter fix up
I hope filling the holes with sealant will work Vince...worked a treat on mine.
Sounds like your really cracking on with the ongoing restoration. I'm very jealous of your FDV find.
I'm hoping mine is okay...we will see. So they are obsolete then. Darn!
I think I found my crank handle. Under glove box carpet isn't it?

My glovebox doesn't seem big enough to warrant a mat, never mind a carpet!

I think this might be an S1 thing Rob. Compared to the Xantia say, the S1 glovebox is absolutely huge. It's bigger than a Pixo boot!ragger wrote:My glovebox doesn't seem big enough to warrant a mat, never mind a carpet!
