Hi Nigel,
I recall doing my driving test and having to give hand signals because the indicators packed in the morning of the test.Bad enough with a normal handbrake when it came to the three point turn part of the test. Bit of a nightmare but I managed. Now if that had been an XM with foot operated parking brake and hand operated ratchet release it would have added a further layer of complexity which I would rather not think about if I am to get some sleep tonight. :-)

'56 I took mine, just after the Suez crises, petrol had been rationed, driving tests had been suspended and you were allowed to drive unaccompanied with a provisional license - brilliant!

Ah yes, the addition of the Suez surcharge of sixpence per gallon. Enraged motorists were assured by the government it was a necessary but temporary measure due to the additional cost of transporting fuel the long way 'round due to blocked Suez canal. Thus began a long learning curve for motorists re governments and taxation of fuel !!

Oh yes! Strangely though, in relation to earnings petrol was dearer then than it is now, my entire pre tax wages of £5.00 would buy 20 gallons, compare that with the present. :o That's largely why not many people had cars, I think I was only the third person in our road to have one, for a teenager to own one was very rare, most teenagers you saw driving then were like me, TV engineers - it was a good job once :D

1956, !! I was still an egg

But i didn't realise that petrol was that expensive back then, in relation to wages, so i guess that it would be a lot more expensive at todays prices if it where rationed agian,
I don't have much left out of my wages in a month it is, :( , i have noticed that yesterday my local Adsa, - Tesco have put there prices down to £109.9 p/l, compared to just over a week ago it was £1.19 p.l, how does that compare with the rest of the country ?

Once agian , the topic has wandered off into something completley different,  , i love it !!!
and yes i am going to look at the indicator stalk today

I think if fuel prices suddenly went up to the 1956 level the economy would collapse! ... anyway, this indicator switch :D

My, an energetic person! I have to mix some concrete - if I have the energy :(

I'm not sure when and where the CXM rally is, can you enlighten me?
