It has a lift pump in the tank but I think it must also have a pressure sensor, there are some electronics in the top of the fuel filter housing, don't know if that is it. The pump reads o/c although the meter bleeps briefly as if there is a diode connected across it, but there are no volts on the leads with the ignition on, bit of a puzzle.

That's what I thought but I have the bill, £90.00 labour! this was two years ago. I must say though that so far it is very easy to work on, a lot of thought seems to have gone into servicing it when it was designed, and of course it has the engine round the right way.

Watching the MPG meter prevents me from doing that, or even pushing the pedal down more than half an inch

Its the E39, 97 - 03 and its an estate, pardon, 'touring' and I certainly do still prefer XMs, the beemer is very nice to drive and to work on, but has no room in the back and the ride doesn't compare.

On the steering rack front i have found enough very good parts to build one good steering ass so things are looking up, as soon as i get the new short engine in the rover i can get the XM sorted.
One thing to note though in my quest to find out why the MK2's are slightly quieter than the originals i like to compare the parts from my MK2 estate (rip) and there are rack changes, the n/s bush that supports the actual rack on that side is about 20mm long and metal on the MK1 on the MK2 it is about 50mm long and nylon there is always very slight play here from experience that can only be felt off the car but with the nylon bush there is no metal to metal rattle......................also the later nylon bush looks like it could be removed and changed, the chances of getting the metal bush out of the end of the lightweight alloy housing on the MK1 are slim at best.

I was in one of your 5 series cars today Peter. A 5 series taxi. Its the same vintage as yours, and was a nice car, a 5 Series Exclusive of sorts! Leather etc. Pity about the suspension though, if it was a lot softer it would be a really good car.

oh and can anyone tell me the prices of the two steering rack gaiters and a pair of track rods please? before i walk into Citroen and they say £400, whereupon i look sheepish and back out towards the door

Hi Dean,just checked Citroen,be pleasantly surprised,L/H gaiter £10.29,R/H gaiter £8.50.The "track rod ends" a wee bit pricer (than AEP at around £12) at £31 and £32.
