Off topic chat about anything you like. Doesn't have to be about XMs (though they will inevitibly come up!). You can even discuss non-Citroens :o in here!

XM antipathy

Post by Citroenesque » Sun Jun 20, 2010 9:19 pm

I'm not that impressed with certain members of the CCC taking pot shots at the XM. Some are well-known CX fascists - sorry enthusiasts - or otherwise and really, although it doesn't affect me in any material way, I do find it against the spirit of a 'Citroen Car Club'. If they were having a pop at Renaults, maybe  but in all honesty would they want me to slag off other Citroen models - albeit unjustified? I happen to think the CX although visually smart is not a a very good example of car design, falling victim to shifting of objectives ( for instance, it was to have rotary power initially but then, when that became unfeasible was limited to four cylinders) and suffering from some deplorable engineering/planning/build quality issues (a tradition ingloriously continued in early XMs admittedly?). OK, the XM was/is tarnished by early reliability problems which were largely addressed and in the end resulted in a car that - to some purists - although lacking in Citroen quirkiness ended up being really quite good. The prejudice of a few should, in my opinion, be treated with the disdain it deserves.

I leave you with this delightful bit of supposed 'Citroen Ethusiast' tomfoolery...

OK, on a slightly more upbeat note, the XM is always well-received at the National rally. anyone turning up? (at Gaydon this year) - I'll be there flying the flag :D

That was a while ago, i did voice my opinions on the CCC forum at the time (im 'cardaft' on there). Ive got to admit i was slightly shocked at seeing such a thing on a Citroen dedicated forum, im quite surprised that it was left on the site and not removed by mods. If everyone started that kind of thread there wouldnt be much of a community, which i think there is with the CCC. I dont think that particular person did themselves any favours though.

Apparently that wasnt a good Xm and it wasnt worth saving. But even so, it was complete and its body parts alone could have helped out other Xm owners, as parts are not too easy to come by for certain things and that will only get worse. There are many Xms being scraped im sure, but that does rahter put it in your face a little.

It all comes down to what you like, i do like CXs but i much prefer Xms. Though there are many cars i dont like i wouldnt dream of doing such a thing.

Ive no idea why this person doesnt like Xms, in fact im almost certain that they have not driven an Xm.

It is odd how often CX owners dont like Xms and vice-versa.

Ah well, we know what they are missing :D

Ive had a really nice day out in the Xm today, around 200 miles or so of mainly country driving. What a car the XM is, its very different in a lot of ways from anything else and what it offers as a car is fantastic.

Ill be there at the National rally this year, still need to plan it but i should make it. Maybe ill be in the Xm, though we would like to take the Traction, might take both. Ill be in the Xm at the CXM :)

Can't drive/isn't old enough to drive would be more accurate.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of this type of behaviour, but I think his usual dislike for XM comments/jokes got out of control in this instance.

I'll be at the National Rally in my Xm on Saturday and Sunday.

My thoughts exactly, if you want the ultimate in comfort and space and amazing fuel consumption (2.1 manual) if you want a car to drive rather than look at there's no contest, not even a BMW :D :(

I look forward to seeing fellow Citroenistes at the Rally. And even look forward to meeting the odd wayward CX fan too! Community is the word. I'm sure Saxo owners probably have more reason to moan than I...

PS I'll do the CXM rally too. Which should put everything even further into perspective. After all I also run a BX. Jo Public just can't understand - but I bet any CX owner can :)

Yes i do like that about the Xm, they are fantastic cruisers, use little fuel and provide good performance and very desirable simplicity and reliability. However i really like Xms for their split personality, i love flicking it into sports mode and hunting down a few sweeping roads, what a joy they are to drive for such a large car. They offer more road holding and handling finesse than many modern cars - which usually ride with the quality of a shopping trolley.

I would find it very diffuclut to find a car which does as much as an Xm does, they are not perfect but what they offer is superb.

I do very much like the way an Xm looks too, more so the hatchback but the estate is a good looking car too.

I was at the DSM rally last weekend, that was a nice event, very nice community of people in the CCC which does rather make the events. It was the same place as the CXM, quite a nice location.

I think I've said it elsewhere, but after 1900 miles in a week in France - including nearly 800 miles in one day - if I'd spent ten times the amount the XM owes me, I would be happy when compared to driving the £30k Mercedes it was co-holidaying with (nice car,.... but really?........)....

Exactly.

The most important thing about Xms for me is i find them interesting. I could spend a lot of money on a car but end up with something dull and boring. Xms just appeal to me.
