I was very sorry to hear that you have to reset the timing Dean, which sounds a bit like my experience not getting the autobox torque convertor fully home! Hopefully you can also achieve the task without too much dismantling work that is rather annoying! With regards, Matthew T.

It is annoying, but i know what the problem is and there is no harm done to the engine.
I have tested the gearbox however and it seems to shift very nicely and smoothly through the gears so that is one less concern.

A real life case of 'wasted spark'! Glad you've found the cause, Dean. Hope the fix goes well.

As a man who once fitted a clutch and gearbox to a Chrysler Horizon (don't ask) whilst lying under the car in a slowly filling puddle and then found the clutch release bearing on the work bench...................

My thoughts go out to you my friend.

 Thank you Rob that cheered me up.
The end is in sight if i can pull this off, and with that in mind i have devised a plan so cunning it would be worthy of a mention in an episode of Blackadder.

Turn crank to bring rear cylinders clear of valve lift.
Pull the hydraulic pump and A/C compressor off and lift the rear rocker cover. Then i will mark the chain and cam sprocket with a reference mark and count the sprocket teeth and mark it half way round (180 degrees off) i will remove the blanking plug in the timing cover giving access to the rear cam sprocket bolt and remove it, i will hook the chain up with cord and drop the sproket off from under it, rotate it 180 degrees and line the aposing sprocket mark up with the original chain mark, mate it back up with the chain and put the bolt back in to stop it dropping but not engage with the cam dowel.
The cam can then be turned 180 degrees until the dowel alligns with the sprocket and re-fit.

4 full turns by hand with plugs out to ensure no contact, re-fit spark plugs, rear rocker, A/C and hydraulic pump, allow sealant to set while i have lunch and then rejoice in my own excellence/stupidity (depending on results).

An early start tomorrow with everthing crossed that this armchair plan will work in practice................

I hope you are successful Dean. Such a shame you had that issue to sort out, but at least you knew what it was.
Look forward to seeing how it all goes.

If you are certain about the current settings Dean then the plan should work I guess! I would check that all is well before refitting the compressor and pump and even the rocker cover to save yourself any further work! In relation to the setting up advice, assuming that all engines have the necessary sprocket marks, in the future I would be inclined simply to position and fit the chains as my earlier marked-up photographs shows!
