Oooooo he isnt a lab ... well.. not 100% .. he is a staff cross with lab and he is amazing and called Rocky. He is as mad as a hatter...

I think i have an idea of the clean engine.. i had 100% veg oil in her when i went for her first mot which is about 10 miles each way...

He's there preparing a lab report on the condition of the engine.

If one of his feline friends was there too the car could have had a cat scan as well..

I'll get my coat...

Just goes to show that oils high in mono un-saturated fat are better for you.

So he's lab staff then.

Well god knows how many years i've been saying it for but veg or BioD depending on the fuel system does no end of good for engines. Especially when they get high miles.

This often shows up when a car has never had top quality fuel run through it and then a few tanks of veg/BioD and you clean the in tank and primary fuel filters out and see all the gunk that is forced out. Also smoking for a little bi when on boost until really clear at which point the veg barely smokes on boost compared to diesel :)

Even on cars that aren't certified for it, running 1/4 of a tank through a system every year helps a lot :)

I've seen enough engines that have extensively run veg to know that it does them absolutely no harm at all Will. Same can't be said for pumps though as veg will soon find out slightly iffy seals or those seals that are not veg-proof...

It's not such a problem to replace them with Viton ones but I'm not sure how straightforward it is on the Bosch EPIC lookalike on the 2.5 though..

Could be fun Jim, BUT if i get the one i like and do keep it long term and it needs them, I know of someone with a decent amount of spare 2.5 engines and they do seem to pop up occasionally for breaking or parts cars when the rot has taken hold for too long that could be bought cheap and the pump taken off so the work can be done on the bench and then just get it swapped with a cambelt and balancer belt at the same time :)

I'm looking into Glowplugs as well as we speak :)

This is really interesting Paul, ....your findings after running it on oil that is. I know you haven't run it much on it, but still the first initial findings seem very positive. Adds further fuel to my veg oil fire!!

Looks like my cars twin is coming along nicely. And the hard standing is really coming into its own

I really hope so Jim. Maybe mine could do with a good clean through! I just need the courage to bung some in mine really, only that is holding my back  !!
What, if any, are the consequences of driving around town a lot? Cleaner more protected engine, or gunked up innards?!

Nothing really Russ. You will find perhaps that you go through a lot of fuel filters initially as the veg will scour the tank and fuel lines as Will says. That'll settle.

One thing you will find if you use a high veg ratio in the colder months is that the engine will need perhaps two glowplug sessions and the cold idle might be really lumpy and smoky but apart from that no problem.

All veg running engines I've seen inside of have been sparkling clean..

I'm surprised there is a difference but wonder how significant it is - enough to justify different part number I guess. Break point is quoted as up to my 1992. Steve
If you fit longer bolts to a short threaded head, the bolts will bottom out before the correct clamping force is reached, so the gasket will leak.

There are other options for glow plugs for most engines that help with this and some have reported that an inline heater of the glow plug kind that heats up some oil can help with the initial cold running but once you get moving the sheer pressure that the oil is out under gets it hot and being thicker this helps even more.
The 1.9td fuel filter housing is great for this as the base is heated quite quickly. Another option is fitting a park heat system using a webasto thermo top from a land rover an aux coolant pump from the same vehicle and an ignition starter using say an old mobile phone :)

Coolant will be quite warm within about 10minutes and if you can provide power to the internal fan will give you a warm interior. The battery size on the xm would limit it to about 15-20mins of running without an extra battery being fitted but it's a lovely feeling to get into a pre warmed vehicle and great for the engine as well. Nice to get out when it's been covered in a foot of snow to see it already melting on the car too!!
