Cheap (£21.95 + free p&p) set of EBC front brake discs for sale here:

You sed might be 286mm discs ray.. I got a feeling 283 is G H reg cars and possibly J and then the caliper changed to a curved parking brake lever and larger discs..
I could be wrong though.

I'm sure this information exists elsewhere on the forum and is repeated here.
XM models have used three types of front disc (and matching calipers + pads) with the majority of models using the 283mm diameter ones.
Early XMs up to RP5228 used 276mm diam x 22mm thick discs
From RP 5229 onwards discs were 283mm diam x 26mm thick
Some later V6 and 2.5TD models used the largest disc at 288mm diam x 28mm thick. The change for both models was made from RP7476.

I was not certain, but I knew early cars were smaller then S1.5s but I could not recall the mm size..
