Diesel leak.

Post by newxmman » Thu May 11, 2023 4:15 pm

Hi all, it never rains....,after trying to sort my lights out I have now sprung a diesel leak suddenly. I’ve had a couple up front before where I just had to replace hoses and my pump has been reconditioned before covid and doesn’t leak and works good. The fresh leak seems behind the big black cover with the large hose going into it at the front. That part seems easy to get off so hopefully I can see where the leak is coming from and dripping down the back of the oil sump. Question, is it just into the pump and out of the pump hoses behind there and is that where the leak is likely coming from and/or is there a place notorious that I should be looking for? Many thanks.

What version of Xm diesel and what big black cover.
Can you supply age and Rp number for the car, as there are variations of fuel systems according to model year.

Hi 92 diesel sd not sed 2.1 turbo. Big black cover covers the engine and diesel pump is behind it. A large hose goes into it from the front of the vehicle. I’ve taken it off, four bolts and a smaller hose goes into it from the back of engine bay these hoses are central. I can then see slightly underneath and I’m hoping it reveals the hose that’s leaking. The leak goes down behind the sump and into the floor. Any good?

The large pipes are just air pipes to and from the intercooler, these are just held on with worm drive clamps and a bolt through each one to a mounting.
You could run the engine with these removed, but be aware the intake manifiold will be sucking a full cylinder charge, even at idle as a diesel engine has no throttle flap.

The black plastic intake manifold is what you mean as a cover.

With the intake manifold and air pipe removed, you should be able to see any diesel leak.
The most common reason for a diesel leak is the rubber injector leak-off pipes have perished. Fit new 3mm leak off pipe, it just pushes on to the injectors.
Also check the blanking plug isn't split. You can make a new blanking plug using a bit of pipe with something wedged up it to seal it.

Leak off pipe is commonly available from the likes of parts stores, diesel specialists, or online.

Good to hear, well done.
Just keep working at resolving issues, you will learn a lot and the Xm will provide service for a long time.
