I would have thought machining the strut head was an easier option.

Maybe I'm imagining it different to you. I'm seeing a nice machined metal adaptor, one end you screw into the strut top as if it was a sphere, then at an angle after this, is a recess to screw the sphere into.

On the French Activa Club website in their technical section there are images of an adaptor to step sizes
of sphere between flat grey C5 spheres and the existing older Activa rams etc so whilst this is interesting
in relation to the adaptor what does this mean with differing sizes of thread on the spheres?

I think the thread is the same on all Citroen spheres. The adaptor is required when replacing an older type sphere with the C5 'saucer' type. Because the body of the saucer type has a bigger diameter the spacer is required to give a bit of radial clearance in locations where space is tight, by moving the sphere away from the mounting point.

I can conform that Ken is right about the sphere threads being the same.
Green spheres screwed in and sealed on the C5 heads that I have recovered.
Was not allowed the C5 spheres so could not try them in an XM head.
