Re: Russ's 2.1 SED Auto
Ah...so it isn't such a stupid thought then. thanks Jim.
I think ABS is fuse number one. But I just push them all back in, as they all seem be doing it.
Well this is the time to try the theory, as it is on, and I haven't tried the fuses yet. So I'll do it tomorrow and see if it works.

Beautiful sunny day (for me) but for you Russ. You finally got the cert, finally took you a long long time...1 day! What was the result of your smoke test now?
NCT in the Republic is 55 euro, a retest is 27 or there abouts.
Enjoy driving it coming year!

Re: Russ's 2.1 SED Auto
Cheers Jaap....Happy Days!!!
yeah good to get it back and all passed. I was really starting to get concerned about the headlights. They were going to be the hardest thing to rectify if the new bulbs were not going to help matters. But they did!
My emissions were these.....
Opacity limit is 3.00
Fast pass 1.50
Fail was 3.33 average.
Free accelerations were 3.64, 3.64, 3.47, 3.51, 3.44, 3.15
Finally passed at 1.70 average.
Free accelerations were 2.01, 1.62, 1.47
In depth there!!!
So I can carry on with my to do list now. Glad to get the first one over with. Also now know what to concentrate on next year.
I must apologise to everyone for the weather. It has been horrid here the past two days. It's because I have had the car MOT'd and fixed. Every time.... And I mean every time any of my cars has had to go in for any work, including picking up the car having just purchased it, it rains cats and dogs, very heavily, without fail. So it's my fault it has been yucky!!!
Sorry!

When it rains, it poors. But all good now!
Try and get a few GOOD spare head lights and just use them for the MOT. You might spot me somewhere going down south on Friday!

What did you do to get the smoke emissions down...or so high?
A 50% reading is about right for smoke free driving with enough GO.

Re: Russ's 2.1 SED Auto
Well, driving like an old fart around town too much is the probable cause for the high emissions.
got a bit sooted up..although it doesn't seem smokey.
To get them down, a damn good blast down a duel carrageway...A40... that links Cheltenham and Gloucester.... locked in third. The garage did it, so I assume that's what they did. We talked about it and agreed that it needed to be simply blown out. They seemed to know what to do and seen it before.
So I must do a good thrash now and again to keep it clear.

Re: Russ's 2.1 SED Auto
Calling 2.1 club....your advice on sump plugs is needed!!!
What a very frustrating afternoon. All set to do my oil and filter change....haven't got the right tool to undo the sump plug. ERRRRRR!
I have got quite an extensive tool collection. I inherited my Grandfathers tool collection as well as access to my Dad's...but not one tool would fit the plug. It has a square hole, I assume for something like a ratchet end would do it. Unfortunately all my ratchets are too big.
So I topped up the underseal instead!
I had a look for this oil leak that was an advisory on the MOT. It isn't that obvious. I think it might be the sump seal. But it certianly isn't coming from higher up. And no tell tale dribbles of oil like the crank seal did. Keep an eye on it I suppose.
It could of course just be the sump plug weeping and the oil is spreading when driving.
And as for the coolant leak...no idea where that is! No signs at all!
Enjoy the sun!

Re: Russ's 2.1 SED Auto
Ahh Russ, I know that so well
It's either a 21mm hex - a real rare size but often a 13/16" AF will do the job but it'll be tight.
Or it's also likely to be an 8mm square as well. Most sump plugs are both but some are just 8mm square...
Always replace the copper washer with a new one. Old ones will always weep.
You can use either a copper or a 'Dowty' washer as often both are supplied with a new sump plug. I prefer the good old copper washer though...

Re: Russ's 2.1 SED Auto
Standard PSA sump plug is 8mm SQ.
When you get the right tool do not force if there is a lot of resistance.
Many dealers now use suction via the dipstick pipe.
It may be the first time in 15 years the sump plug has been undone.
Creased or torn sump metal is not unknown in this case.
For the MOT smoke test as well as the preparatory over-revving I wait with the car and keep the engine running and hot.
