Now that ratcheting noise does go right though me when it's not done properly - I'm in total agreement!

Hi All
According to the Citroen Owners Handbook to apply the parking brake the latch should be pushed in first then push the pedal.
Ratchet sound by design every time. Count the clicks, less than 4 or more than 10 and your parking brake needs sorting.
Now for release as per the Owners Book, grip the latch from underneath and pull towards you. Once again by design listen to
that delightful clonk as the pedal springs up and bangs against its stop.

The parking brake in Mercedes is exactly the same but you can't leave the handle in the released position (it springs back in) and there is a rubber buffer around the stop to reduce the clonk.
If I use it (rarely) I try to release it by resting my left foot on the pedal...easy in an auto...see, it's how the cars were designed...none of this funny clutching business..

I was at one point looking into fitting a damper onto the pedal and i think it was doable with the right sized gas strut and a little welding to give a feel of quality to the parking brake setup.
The thing is as Dman has said i have an auto so there was never really any point for me.

Another yes, i never have the handle pushed in when applying the parking brake. Same as with a handbrake, i always keep the button pressed until its up.
My MOT tester doesnt though, he was testing the handbrake effectiveness by running the rollers and engaging the parkingbrake with the handle pushed in. The pedal was pressed in so hard that when he let the lever go the pedal flew up and the handbrake cables came off! FAIL! There there is a little sleeve thing to keep the cables on, which lookd to have never been in the right place.
