John makes a good point about the SORN number - that'd pick up additional
large numbers of Xm's laid up in storage but still alive...

In reality I guess we have to accept that these figures were only released because the DVLA were forced too.
We could read far too much into this first set of statistics without knowing the basis of collection (full year or not etc).
At least they are going to publish annually in the long term. As they catch up we should get the 2008 and then 2009 figures.
Those will be for full years so numbers and trends will be of even greater interest to us.
I suspect that asking for the SORN statistics is a lost cause.
Pity because we could then move on to total number of years tax bought by model and compare it with number of successful MOT's.

Not sure how this would mean a lot or is it me? I've certainly MOT passed cars and
parked them back off the road and SORNED rather than taxed them so there would
be odd discrepancies in the figures (unless of course I'm the only nutter to rotate
my cars in use!). Yes the car would usually be taxed sometime in that year of MOT
duration so maybe it doesn't influence things.

I think their data is a bit of rubbish or WAY FAR out!

For Example: Peugeot killed the 305 Car in 1988 but they seem to have some in the 90's! Are the dats for when the car was MOT'd or when first used?

I believe the discrepancies are due to imports or late registered cars rather than cockups
- there do seem to be some odd stats that may well be down to clerical error - bear in mind
this info has been filtered through some fella at the BBC and that's after some Civil Servant
and his PC spat the lot out as a spreadsheet!! Of course HMG's computers NEVER make
mistakes...

I wouldn't be surprised if there were some 305 vans sold a few years after the last cars and I suspect they would fall into the 'car' catagory.

I checked most of the YBL XMs a while back and there were a lot on sorn and also many that were still listed but not taxed.

Well, you need a couple of hours with nothing to do, enter all the YBL numbers from say 400-600 one at a time and see what their status is, I saw the word anorack mentioned

If the figures are correct we must own a largish proportion of 2.1 manuals, an even larger proportion of Mk2s and most of the YBLs

Cheer up Peter - isn't an anorak another way of describing a true enthusiast - or a "believer".

Anyhow, I did very much the same thing as mentioned earlier and it threw up all sorts of questions
as well as answers. The YBL must've been batch pre registered by CitroenUK as the BL is definitely Slough.

I don't think the list is particularly accurate' there are no DS on it for example, and also the Dyane column does not list any activity for 1972 cars, which my dad's is, and has been MOT'd constantly since 2005...

Perhaps they're only presneting data for cars that pay road tax, from '73 on?

The data will give a rough idea of what there is out there, but it is hard to get an idea of how many cars there are in existance. The best figures would be from DVLA to show what cars they have registered on their systems.
