Wheel bolts? Management lights? ABS? :? :? :? Now what is this all about?
Is it so difficult to group different topics under proper headings??????
Plea------se! Couldn't we make an effort to keep things organized so that everyone looking for information can find it without the need to sift through 10 thousand postings? Grrr.

Jan,

Ive moaned about this before a few times, but just got brush aside... it wont work.. :x

But I do agree with you... info gets lost like this.. as the search's on the boards (FCF included) are quite vuage and hopeless..

Yeah,

Its not the best, but it happens, and will happen again. Once I have the problem with my ABS resolved, I'll make a seperate post with all the details, for posterity.

Hi All

I agree with the concerns about the difficulty in finding information.
As a moderator I have made a concious decision not to interfere with postings other than clearly identified spam.
My reasoning was in part due to the fact that I was still considering us a temporary home rather than permanent.
The other consideration was my experiences where I have chosen to abandon membership of a number of boards
because the heay moderating and posting protocols were not for me.
Our free and easy approach may be difficult to search but it does seem to keep people contributing.
I see with the size of FCF where we are potentially going though if we do not introduce structure.
I have found the FCF sticky system does not gives as good a result as I expected in helping with searches.
I did start a method with my self help contributions by starting a subject and then reguarly making updates to the first post.
The key feature of this is that it does not rely on moderators approval or intervention as any member may start a self help topic.
This sort of item could just be documenting a search you have made with links to what you found.
Explain what you were searching for then just put the most useful items first and your comments on value.
Would be invaluable to future searchers.

John

Hi Jan/Paul
I AGREE with both of you as I've already asked for the ABS to be made as a sticky in THIS thread twice but nobody seems to have noticed the plea/request for this

The two following quotes with plea/requests as made by me from the above linked thread :-

Hi Bob ,
Is this the THREAD you were looking for ? As it's buried in 'Technical/Hydraulics' section which makes it hard to find !

Only the links given in that thread to the old forum can not be opened up unless you were actually a member (which I was not Unfortunately) with a valid 'Tag-name' and password but the link to the thread in this site still has lots of useful information to help out 'nothernboygirl' and 'oh4ndu' (BTW Welcome) and others hopefully !

As there seems to be a few 'Scattered' threads on ABS sensor problems !

 I suggest that this topic should be made as a 'Sticky' in an appropriate technical section, as I don't think currently that there is one (If I'm wrong  , sorry and someone please point me to it with a link thanks) :D

Hi oh4ndu (Again) !
I've managed to trawl thro' the old forum where you don't need a 'Tag-name' and Password to access the threads which should identify the ABS sensor type's !

IIRC the Green plug/connector (opposite end of the sensors where you can take the readings) is the Bendix type which should normally give a value of 2650 ohms to 2850 ohms reading if in good working order.
The ones fitted to the front wheels are connected (Green plug end) just above the drive-shafts off a bracket/clip under the inner/underside wings (just follow the wires from the sensor) or check them from the connector plug that's plugged in to ABS-ECU (in the black box on the O/S just behind the headlamp unit).

For the Teves (Ate) ABS sensors these have a Blue ended plug/connector (opposite end of the sensors where you can take the readings) which should normally give a value of 1050 ohms to 1080 ohms reading if in good working order.
The ones fitted to the front wheels are connected (Blue plug end) which the connector plugs into is made on the out-rigger from the inner wing which supports the trailing edge/ends of the front bumper (just follow the wires from the sensor), the out-rigger can be seen/accessed by removing the plastic front wheel arch liners.

The following extracted from THIS (Club-XM Forum) thread, I used this method to check out the impedance/ohms reading which worked for me to identify that I had a L/H/R ABS sensor which had an open circuit (If you have Bendix ABS type sensors) :-

"Look at the brown connectors on the underside of the plug with the big cable to your right. At the end opposite to the cable end you'll find a cluster of 8 connectors grouped together in two rows. Starting from the left the pairs are grouped vertically. The first pair is terminals 35 and 18 and these are for the front left wheel
The second pair is terminals 34 and 17 and these are for the rear right wheel
The third pair is terminals 33 and 16 and these are for the front right wheel
The first pair is terminals 32 and 15 and these are for the rear left wheel

A measurement taken across each pair should read approx 2000ohms. There should also be no reading between any of the pins and any good earth point on the car.

Although its possible that it may be something else it is the easiest thing to check and works 99% of the time.

If you find you have a Teves ABS system then the ecu is below the battery tray bolted to the side of the ABS block. I've never worked on one so I cant tell you which order the pins are in on the plug. However, here are the pins and to which wheel they refer:
Pins 15 and 30 Left Hand Front
Pins 1 and 6 Right Hand Front
Pins 28 and 19 Left Hand Rear
Pins 29 and 31 Right Hand Rear"

More ABS info from the Club-XM Forum
I hope this is of help to you and others on the forum and the ABS problem is made as a 'Sticky' in some Technical Area of the forum :D :!:

Hi John,
I do tend to slightly agree about your FCF comment BUT I totally disagree if say your where looking for a failed Xantia strut top problem similar to the XM that's now been moved into the 'Super Sticky' section of the FCF forum under the title "Another 'Speared' Xantia Strut Top...Check Yours", so that this subject matter is NOT constantly being discussed but maybe the odd post added to the thread if any new problems/advise has been found :!:

Also you say that 'My reasoning was in part due to the fact that I was still considering us a temporary home rather than permanent.' !
But as the old Forum has not come back to life for nearly a year (Hopefully it will) and no info formal statement has been made/issued of a way forward and that this Forum has been going since April 14th 2009 its looking more like permanent and then collating/moving the info into the correct Technical/Section or Self Help files will be a hell of a job in the long term, if the other Forum does not get resurrected !

So IMHO some sticky's for the XM's :- ABS, Driver's (RHD) 9 pin door window regulator/mechanism Failure and Front Suspension Strut Failure, oh and maybe Front Door Lock/Barrel Failure Problems (How could I have nearly forgotten that one  ) would be of help in the long term.

Hopefully now Jan and Paul someone will take note and make a STICKY about XM ABS sensors and the other items mentioned above.
XMX :D

What about an ABS section, like we have an Electrical section, a bodywork section?

In totally honesty I did really pass this thread by where wheel bolts had already been covered in the wheel
trims thread!!

This isn't an easy one - the fact is, threads do meander and divert from the original poster's intention
and shouldn't be stifled with a rigid moderator's intervention yet the only way some key info could actually find
it's right place is in a clear allocation of sections and in this instance an ABS section as requested. In fact, how
about an autobox section while we're at it too - in effect splitting "Transmission, drivetrain, & running gear"
into more sections than the one size fits all.

Where's CiarĂ¡n - hope he's not having real hassles like I'm being blighted by too!!

I've bent Jim's ear about what I personally consider to be the very unsuccessful annexing to Siberia of what
were originally FCF important or useful threads where they're now in a place where nobody will ever venture
although their position is seen by Jim as a temporary one where a better php is being lined up in many ways
similar to this forum's.

If the search engine isn't any good many gems of information are inevitably going to be lost in the incorrect
posts so the only clear way I can see this being prevented is one as John has proposed where distinct sections
are constantly updated and edited with clear tiles/signposting. A little bit of cut and paste by the contributors
of key info into a new thread won't hurt the database server will it - I'm led to believe the capacity of these
forums we're on is barely idling let along at breakneck speed; correct me if I'm wrong.

Shouldn't this "Search" problem post then be moved to a Topic of its own instead of being hidden under "Wheel Bolts"????

Raise it as a seperate item on the moderators section. We should consider any ideas and changes there.
This is a forum that has grown out of a need to fill a sudden gap rather than lead by someone with a burning desire to produce the perfect XM website.
Well due to Ciaran that gap has been incredibily well filled with a very simple but effective Web Forum.
Its current format has allowed it to be found and encouraged people not only to join but post heavily.
We are growing at a far faster rate than the old site did in its early days five or so years ago.
That has been achieved against a big reduction in the number of active XM's in that 5 years.
That suggests that there cannot be that much wrong with the way we are doing things.
Any changes to the Website need Cirian as part of the decision process.
We need him to wear his IT hat as well as the Moderator one, not forgetting the Site owner, Host Server Provider and Mantenance Technician hats as well.
Just for now we ought to wait until Ciaran can rejoin us again as a really active member.
One of the few recent posts from him mentioned that he was recovering from a bout of Glandular Fever.
I suspect that at the moment there are a large number of calls on his time to catch up with things.

I repeat that any member may start a subject area. Just describe it in the heading, then review, edit, provide extracts or links all posted under that heading.
Where possible credit sources as well. If the first post is regularly updated with any new information then searching on that subject becomes easy, just read the first post for the key information. It will be so much easier if many of the members do this research, reporting and editing work. Waiting for the moderators to do it is bound to take much longer and the results will be much less comprehensive.

John
