On another note, my series one starter motor suddenly failed (the white XM) and I wonder whether the stater motor from the blue series 2 would fit; I think it does fit.

The starters are probably interchangeable, but check the number of teeth on the pinion.
There are various starters used on both versions, some are the same item.

By my math just now, there are 109 tested and taxed Citroën XMs on UK roads today according to Howmanyleft.

And I think that's a good gauge of how infrequent they are now in continental Europe too.

In fact, I have an acquaintance who knows I have an XM who took a holiday in France a couple summers ago, and he told me he toured most of the country, and he saw ONE XM on his whole trip, a pretty basic model (if I recall) right in the heart of Paris.

So they're even scarce in France now, let alone everywhere else.

I have a friend in Austria, too, who claims he hasn't seen a running and driving XM in probably 20 years.

That said, the XM's sister, the Peugeot 605, is even rarer in the UK now, according to Howmanyleft. I count 23 taxed and tested for UK roads in 2025

Incidentally, the specialty dealership in Jacksonville, Florida, where I got my XM from (and I believe bump_drft got his XM from the same dealer) also had a Peugeot 605 V6 in their inventory when I bought my XM




That car is now in Pennsylvania with an enthusiastic Peugeot owner last I knew.

When I bought my XM in France in 2012, I would usually see several different (and not local) XMs every week. Now, I am lucky to see one a month other than mine and a rather tatty 2.1 that lives in a neighbouring village.

This year I went to a couple of big-ish (200 - 2000 cars) classic meets in France and mine was the only XM.

They have certainly disappeared at a surprising rate in France, as have most cars more than 15 years old. I big factor in this is the french law that prevents any car that does not have a current CT (MOT) from being sold, except to a registered scrap metal dealer, who is obliged to cancel the registration (which is irreversable). The law is often ignored, but just as often it results in the loss of a perfectly fixable car, and the scrap dealers don't seem to be interested in selling parts. A few years ago I tried to buy a couple of XM V6s privately, where the owner was selling parts, but they would not sell me the complete car, for fear of breaking the law.

Q3-2025 update

Taxed = 102 (10% attrition year on year)

S1 = 41
S2 = 61

SORN = 585

Since I bought mine, I haven't seen another XM on the road despite be only 3 miles from Tony Weston in Cambridge, Glos. and they look after a couple of other V6s.

Q4-2025 update.

Taxed = 91 (8% attrition year on year)

S1 = 37
S2 = 54

SORN = 595

... can I assume those are referring to prefacelift (`89-`93) models?
