Hi Matthew
What is the name of the second garage that did the repairs, and where are they based?

I have now ruled out the coolant and oxygen sensors chaps by connecting known good examples! It may not be at all connected but I have also noticed a weird flickering of the instruments lights that suggest to me an earthing issue! Regards, Matthew T.

Have you pulled all the spark plugs to see if all the cylinders are running equally rich?
You might also want to monitor the oxygen sensor voltage to make sure that it is detecting a rich mixture, and not a lean one (due to air leak or misfire).

Matt,
Not your current issue, but a V6 thermostat...
Don't know whether you might have seen this on FCF, or whether it's of any interest:

What an appalling job, in situ, for such a 'routine replacement item'.

The ES engine is wonderfully well packaged, I guess this is a slight downside to that packaging and in truth how often do you replace a stat? they are pretty reliable these days and I would be surprised if most cars see more than one replacement in their lifetime.

Replacing an ES9 thermostat (without any manual or advice on how to do it) was almost the first job I did on a Xantia, and it had the benefit of making a lot of other jobs seem easy. I don't remember pulling off all the parts that Simon did, but the hydraulic pipe routing is what really makes the job difficult (an ES9 XM may be very slightly easier). In my case, the thermostat replacement turned out to be completely unnecessary.

Re: S1 V6 auto back on the road at last!! - fourth time luck
In the absence of any other leads I am still wondering if the flywheel sensor might the cause of the poor running issue and it is possible the component sustained damage when the starter ring broke loose. Based on some advice I have read a defective sensor could cause hesitation, misfiring and increased fuel consumption as on this site: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/7-cran ... e-symptoms" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I have a spare senor so I may now do a switch to check. Regards, Matthew T. PS. I can confirm that all the cylinders are running rich Mike and I thought changing the PRV thermostat was tricky Chris!

Re: S1 V6 auto back on the road at last!! - fourth time luck
As earlier confirmed by Will, the engine will not run when the flywheel sensor is absent, but in my case I think there may just be superficial damage causing issues at higher engine speeds. The tip of the sensor had certainly been scraped by the loose starter ring and may be that is enough to upset matters! Regards, Matthew T.
