I got an xm transported from seascale in the lakes back to the farm on anglesey, 6 miles from holyhead for £250 quid last year...

Get someone to check out the leaking pipe.
Might be an easy repair and make the car drivable.
Get it MOTed and drive it over.
Robert Smart might know of a Irish Citroen Indy willing to check the car over and get MOT.
Differences between Irish, Northern Irish and Our Own MOT's might make a magazine article anyway.

e in that horrible situation we were in fifteen years ago with the CX. There are still some good examples around that are needlessly being scrapped! I had a trailer a few years ago but sold it. Now wishing I hadn't.....!!!!!!!!

Im lucky enough to have a trailer which an xm just fits on and currently has remains of a H reg sed on it plus an A frame too.. trailer though does need attention to brakes and lights at the moment..

Talking of A frames, teh85% rule is only an advisory guideline, but it is illegal to tow a car with the wheels on the road, unless the car is legal itself.

I'm not actually sure if A frame towing is legal at all now.

James. Give us more detail about the car and how did you intend to get it to Hollyhead?

A framing is the greyest of grey areas. Technically, it's illegal to tow anything over 750kg that is unbraked - as an A-framed XM certainly would be. Whether the towed car is legal or not doesn't really come into it, as it's technically a trailer. But A framing was originally only for recovery use anyway. If a disgruntled copper pulled you, there's almost certainly something he can do you for. Most turn a blind eye though.

Hope you can get this sorted James. It'll make quite a story for PC I suspect! Collection capers always make good reading.

I've spoken to VOSA and some others about A frames and as its unbraked you cant have the frame and whats on it weigh more than 750kg as if it breaks away from the hitch there is nothing to stop it.

Hence when you see most A frames being used they are smart cars or the like as they weigh below this.

Personally i know A frames can take quite heavy cars but i wouldnt risk it when a trailer is so much easier and not a lot of weight in the grand scheme of things

Try www.transporterhire.co.uk. I've used them several times in the past, including collecting my HY pick up from North Wales, moving a variety of BX's and my Land Rover. I'll be hiring from them in the next couple of weeks to collect my newly purchased CX Familiale. They generally have 1500kg payloads and 4.3m beds (the CX will have to go on backwards to fit!), and come with all the straps etc. IIRC it's £95 / day with a generous daily mileage allowance, with it just a couple of pence a mile over this. They have vehicles based all over the UK - the one I use is a Merc. Sprinter and has always handled all I could give it with ease.
