Nick,
What are you after, diesel only or petrol will do, series 1 or series 2, a car that needs work or turnkey?
There is a car in Norfolk that could be a good buy but needs an unknown amount work. See the for sale section. There seem to be a dearth of diesel XM for sale at present, but will report back from Wetherby later...you never know, but people do want diesel XM, especially in Manual form.
Having had two 406, I can honestly say an XM is leagues ahead in all areas, especially driver comfort.

Re: German Metal Convert
Hi Dieselman.
It would have to be diesel. Preferably a 2.1 as I know the engines quite well and like them.
The idea would be to use it as a motorway car but I don't really have anywhere to work on a vehicle right now so would need to be usable from the off.
I am keeping my eyes out for alternatives mind, I am currently watching a very clean example of a xantia which could be ideal
Just thought I would hop on here to see how viable an option an Xm could be, if there still are any out there to buy!
Thanks
Nick

They do crop up and especially at Citroen Rallies.
Like a 406, an XM is streets ahead of a Xantia.

Re: German Metal Convert
In some ways Will, in some ways... Having both I could discuss at length!!! All I'll say at the moment is the XM is the nicer and more refined car to drive.Dieselman wrote: an XM is streets ahead of a Xantia.

Re: German Metal Convert
Hi Jim,
Thanks for the input,
There have been a couple of 2.1 xantias floating around recently but all in a condition that i wouldnt chance my money on haha.
There is however a 1.9TD SX Xantia that i have my keen eye on
Not quite the right engine but makes a difference to my insurance it seems and the condition of the rest of the car makes up for it.
Cant post more info about it for fear of someone else taking it before i get the chance to!

Re: German Metal Convert
Nick, the 1.9TD is a very different engine and has a totally different feel to the 2.1. The 1.9 is a bit lacking in low-down grunt in comparison but is a lot revvier than the 2.1 with more go at the top end. Whereas the 2.1 is all out of puff at 4000 rpm the 1.9 keeps going quite eagerly to 5000 and beyond. It's not a lazy engine like the 2.1 and needs revving well to get the best out of it..
If you have no previous experience of them you may find it quite surprisingly different; more like a petrol engine than a diesel..

Re: German Metal Convert
I have never had a 1.9TD engine in a bigger car, but i have had a 1.9TD ZX (which went very well)
One advantage that is there other than the condition of the car is that the engine already has a good old fashioned Bosch pump standard, so i wouldnt end up having to do a conversion later myself! I would prefer a 2.1 really, but i cant stress enough how clean this car is, its only done 60,000 miles since 1994!
