Just to make a point.. Im not asking how reliable is your xm literally.. it was just the report i listed in my first post how the xm beat all the German stuff...

we all know how good and reliable xm are.. that's why we have them...

I'm not surprised by the Mercs, they went through a 'black' period, with several cars in the bottom of the JD power servery due to poor electrics ect. Odd that so many Audi's featured. Then again everyone thinks VW's are the most reliable cars to buy, when they really aren't that special.

Vw owners are ashamed to admit they were wrong, that they paid over the odds for cars that are no better than normal.

I drove E and S models Mercs in the recent past and also VW's. The mercs were expensive to repair! The shocks on the S320 alone would cost a fortune, they're electronic and don't last long here. I once just dropped a VIP off, and broke down a mile further along the road in a VW, quite new and luxureous (DVD in ceiling, electronic slide doors had already stopped working at 50 K miles. So, yes, they're not as perfect as you would think.

Exactly!

How did the XM get onto that list? Surely there are a score of other cars which would have come and gone in the meantime? And is the source available now on-line? I´d love to have the link. You could invert the list and say the XM is more reliable than

• . In my experience of a decade of XM driving I have had two uncompleted journeys and one which didn´t start due to a malfunction. My present car has had one uncompleted journey. I don´t call that unreliable. The car does need maintenance and there are some niggles but they are just that, nothing you would not expect of a 160,000 mile car. The ABS sensor is a new problem, the pinion valve leaked and over 12 degrees the LCD display is incomplete. In cold weather it works properly. The rest of the car is fully functional.

You would have thought that the Renault Laguna II or Peugeot 307 would be in there. They were pretty bad.

I looked at that further by going to the Warrany Direct website. Cars such as the Laguna II had around 130 points which is fewer than you´d have imagined given the car´s reputation. The data is based on WD´s customers´ claims. I wonder was the sample of XMs large enough to be representative. But on the face of it, it seems like a quite robust sample with weightings attached to cost and frequency. The only thing we can do is to log on to WD´s website and write a review telling it like it really is. I see J.Marsh has done so already.

I don't see how telling Warranty Direct how to suck eggs will work, they take their figures from the amount of claims on the warranty policies held with them.

Perhaps you didn´t mean to sound curt, but you did. Did you misunderstand something or not read it properly: I said one can write a review of one´s car at the WD website and thereby inform others that the XM is not such a disaster.

Maybe you could re-read my post and see if you still think I am really telling WD how to do something they already know how to do.
