The 2.0 and 2.1TD engines seem very rebust and hardy. Perhaps the 2.1 can suffer headgasket issues, though not a huge problem and should almost avoided with regular coolant changes.

TCTs are pretty hardy too, my Xantia has done 122K and it really does pull like a train, its smooth and quiet too. The TCT XM is on about 100K and its engine is just as quiet and is showing no signs of wear. Neither use a drop of oil or coolant. The 2.1 has done 65K, so its got many years left in it yet!

Im sure you will soon find out for yourself what XMs are like for mileages, you will no doubt be doing a few miles as they are very nice places to spend time.

Another advantage of the 2.1 is that it gives better mpg the a 2.2 Hdi - mine anyway

Any of them Peter!! The 2.2 isn't that amazing on fuel, its not you!

The 2.1 TD are amazing, the earlyer ones are better then the later Lucas EPIC ones. Lucas mechanical or Bosch mechanical... 45mpg plus easy

On a good long run mine will do 52 mpg. Happy days. Mind you my DS3 hdi will do nearly 70mpg on a run.

Mine would do 50+ but this C5 struggles to do more than 45 mpg driving at a steady 60 mph, I put a tuning box on it to try and improve the consumption, it made no difference - but it doesn't half go, when I can afford the fuel

Well i will be able to test the figures on here soonn enough as my wife just reminded me that we are off on holiday in just 5 weeks time....right down south near Dover....and yes we are going in the XM

Kind of nervous but also looking forward to spending time in such a great place......not down south, i mean in an XM, Lol

Trouble is with economy figures is that there is so many variables, usually I don't take any notice! The first few miles of XM driving I found a bit nerve racking but it soon went away!

I had the same feeling, mine was a brand new car and I took it into town the first night. The panoramic windsreen makes judging the gap a bit more awkward, but after a few miles the XM shrinks.

Im not fussed on the size at all...ive driven all sorts.....what makes me nervous is you get to know your own car...what work has been done on it, its foibles, and generally how reliable and tempremental it is or can be. The XM will be driven back to Oldham from Anglesey and then pretty much sit around for a month until it gets insured and on the road. Then shortly after it will be driven down to St Leonards on the south coast, then a couple of days later, back up to London and back and then after touring around down there, all the way back up to Oldham again...thats a lot of miles in a short space of time....and all in a car that i dont know very well. Thats whats making me nervous.

Im sure everything will be fine, but i was the same with the Xantia when i bought that....and that worked out great

Just one more thing! Don't let anyone tell you the handbrake is a big hassle on a manual car Vince!

It's all about getting the right sequence on controls which is intuitive and natural. You can have some
fun wading through this thread and it will spare me recounting my thoughts any further... lol
