Going back to the carpets. Xm carpet is one piece, so not really practical to lift out. But, if you pull the surrounding carpet and sound deadening back from the area needing welding, then that should be sufficient.

Definitely take the wings off! In fact, after comments like that from the garage, I would begin to question the integrity of the welding they are going to do!

Unfortunately don't have access to compressor.

Can I do it without one, i.e. garden sprayer? What do you mean by box oil? Will the oil cause problems with the welding, i.e. hinder him or cause it to catch fire?

yes do it after he has welded , the box oil is actualy a oily soft wax so you wont leave oil slicks in the rain everywhere you go but it is about £25 for a bottle to do the whole car.............

you will have some success with a gargen sprayer but you need some pressure to fully atomise the wax/oil to get good coverage but if you cant beg borrow or steal a compressor it is worth a go just to treat the inside of the welds, shame your not local......... any other forum members near you?

My brother has a garage in north Wales with a compressor, mostly used for unbolting wheel nuts. I could ask him if I could use it when I'm next up there. Won't it be difficult to spray inside the welds if it's been welded up. Sorry if my questions sound a bit naive but I've no idea what's involved here, still not entirely sure what box oil is, have you a link to an example.

Just searched for schutz gun on ebay, seems cheap enough. Have you done this yourself, which points do I spray the oil on? Should I use something 1st to get rid of any rust/corrosion already there? The car is in pretty solid condition its just the sills.

Brand names might be; Waxoyl, Bilt Hamber, 3M, Dynitrol...

Any pointers where to spray the oil, what would be ideal is if someone had a photo of the understand and used paint shop or something to mark the spots where I can spray. I'm assuming you can spray inside the sills?

there are plugs in the back of the cills in the rear arches, also plugs behind the wings you can only get to with the wings removed, i can get some pictures of my car as its on axle stands with nothing on it, your not in a rush though are you? give me a week or so.

It's the only plug that I can see that would require removal of the wings to access. I can also see a few other plugs underneath the car, is this what you mean?

Is there a possibility that the welding the garage do may restrict the box oil getting where it needs to?

Thats the one, if you need to get to a bit you cant reach then just drill a hole and buy some more plugs to put in them, it wont affect the strength of the car or cause any mot issues at all so long as the holes are cleanly drilled and new grommets are fitted.

Took the wings off, as expected there was some corrosion on the bottom but rest of the wing was good. Got rid of the excess rust with a wire brush and applied a few coat of Kurust which got it almost back to the bare metal. There's a small bit of metal that sticks out on the bottom of the wings for bolting the bottom onto the sill, this bit was very badly rust, it was barely hanging on by tiny slivers of metal so I filled it in and strengthened it with some metal epoxy steel. It claims to be as strong as steel & it certainly feels it. Sprayed the bottoms with a few coats of Hammerite rust prevention primer & I'll spray some waxoyl black before I put the wings on after the garage have finished the welding.
