The CX GTi something is not the only vehicle from days long past that performed better (again subjective) than many vehicles on the road today. I've owned CXs and know a little bit about them. They were OK, but you have to move on. I am with Ciarán all the way. I like the XM, the one I have, that is. I don't mind it is not very frugal with fuel in urban traffic. It performs very well on long hauls. My family likes it, everyone who rides in it likes it. And at just 10 years of age and less than 55k km it will stay my, our, pleasure, our comfort on wheels for many more years to come. Thank you

You have got me wrong... I don't dislike the XM, if I didn't like it, the car would be long gone. Sure I might hate working on the heap of sh!t, but where's my alternative. The XM's biggest problem is the cars that preceded it. My diet of cars for the last 20years (ie: since I was 16years old) is: CX2400, CX2200, GS1220, CX GTi Turbo, CX safari, DSpecial, ID19... with rare drives in cars like DS19's, DS23's, SM's and tractions and 2cvs. You get out of these sorts of cars expecting something really special from Citroen. To find what is a good car .... but certainly not amazing like the old pre PSA era cars.

Like it's been said above, if I hate working on the XM, can you imagine how I'll get along with a C5 that doesn't even have proper hydraulics I better keep my fingers crossed that the XM keeps running for a long, long time You see, it would be a very, very brave person that suggests to SWMBO that she should drive the "sh!tty old cars" I like

Maybe C6's will become worthless overnight and we can try one of them .... I fear the cost of spare parts though, not to mention wierd electrical issues that no-one can figure out.

Shane has exactly the same probelem with the XM that Jag fans have with the XJ-S.. What it repalaced was that good..

only just found this as i dont get on the web forums that often, but the 45-50mpg figures are easily attainable in a 2.1td and 40-45mpg around the town also, as a taxi driver i used to spreadsheet all my fuel purchases for tax and mileage at the end of each shift etc, so i know i got those figures, and trust me as more customers per hour means more money i wasnt tootling around town like driving miss daisy....

The Xantias handling and ride quality is far better than the XM.

Well --- you must have different Xantiae than I've come across. The Xantia ride is, of course, better than ordinary cars, but for me the XM leaves it for dead in terms of comfort. The God-awful seats in the Xantia ruin it for me and I think the later air bagged ones are even worse. Shame, as I do think in many ways the Xantia is better screwed together than the XM and more reliable --- just look how many older ones are about every day compared to similar age cars.
I'm really not that interested in Top Gear kind of handling -- I use my XM as a hard working tool still and there is still absolutely no comparable car on sale to touch it. I think this obsession with 'handling' is the ruination of many modern cars --- the Defender I use for work has a more comfortable ride than the last couple of German modern offerings I've been in !

I agree entirely Mike. My early cars all ran on crossplys and the ride was superb compared with most modern ones. I remember the Morris Oxford estate we had on moving down here in 1970 you could hardly feel a bump on the main roads and if you did hit a big one it didn't shatter your teeth like the modern cars. I am sure there would be a good market for a comfortable car even if it wouldn't go round corners at 60 mph. Even the hydropnumatics are harder than the used to be, at low speed anyway, I liked the DS. I will have to try fitting four accumulator spheres to my XM suspension.

I might have considered doing that Robert if there had been any left. It would have to be a DTR Turbo 2 Safari and I think they have all gone I went up to Yorkshire and drove one at Savoy Motors not many years ago, it drove nicely but was rather well ventilated around floor level in fact you could see the road through the n/s rear sill, to big a job for me.

...got to watch out for the porous block issues with the DTR Turbo 2 engine though! Although if they are still going nowadays then it should have had it's replacement engine from Citroen back in the day. Unless it's been stored up somewhere for years it might still have the original engine...

Can't beat a nice CX Athena can you Robert...nice cars. Been cleaning and photographing dad's CX Athena this morning in fact...
