Hi Richard, the rasping manifold won't hinder the car but dependent on how bad the leak you could draw
the leaking exhaust gasses into the car. Unlikely if you're currently driving it and don't feel headachey or
nauseous. It may impair performance and economy but not by a significant amount but for just a week
I'd try it but be aware of looking after yourself keeping the car well ventilated etc!

If you bought one of the 80quid buy it now winders off ebay and fitted it at least that's cut the labour
down if you are biting the bullet with the ABS and manifold gasket though a good garage shouldn't be
relieving you of that sort of money. Whereabouts are you located in the country - there's bound to be
someone here on the forums who can recommend a decent fella.

Very interesting thread this one, as I have the same job to do on the white SX.

I'm getting the same 'tappety' sound as Richard. I seem to remember someone (Steelcity Steve?) posting a picture showing dark sooty deposits around one of the exhaust ports where the manifold had been leaking......I'm expecting to see the same thing on mine .

I have to say, I'm really not looking forward to this job, I can see a lot of frustration ahead. I'll have to keep the lump hammer well out of reach, just in case my patience runs out

Still, it could have been worse, the previous owner thought it needed a head gasket.

Just one question from me for now though.......will I need access to both sides of the car? My garage is very narrow so I have to park up against the wall, so I only have access to one side, will this be a problem?
