That's what I did - cracked it off, started engine, lowered, undid regulator then turned the engine off. It was SERIOUSLY tight before the Westons sorted it out for me. Then it was merely tight and I couldn't get my sphere removal tool in a good place. Plus it was really dark underneath it at 8:15 this morning!
To be honest, the ride isn't magical - it's still pretty dreadful over rough roads for what is perceived as a wonderful, floaty system. But then, these strut Citroens never rode as well as the double-wishbone ones. On the other hand, I prefer BX and XM because they don't tend to keep bouncing off the bump stops at the speed I tackle the mountain roads around here. My poor CX was also testing those stops!
What is noticeable though is when you go over a crest. It really does properly float back to normal level. So smooth. I like this.
Really, I still need to get the clutch changed to gain maximum enjoyment from this car - something I've been saying for over a year now! It's still stiff and heavy, but I still really don't fancy the job.

Changing the clutch is pretty easy. Driveshafts out of the gearbox, gear linkages undone, support the engine, remove the starter and bell-housing bolts, then move the box sideways on a jack.

You've not seen my driveway have you? I think the XM is too wide to go into my poxy little garage. Also, it's currently full of a Dyane with its engine in bits...
I want to crack on with the brake overhaul first though. But I'm still trying to find a sensibly priced slider kit. Citroen really are rubbish.

BX Owners to XM beware you will not get an 8X4 sheet of ply in the back despite its size.

Hooray! I have a working parking brake at last! Citroenxm sent over a caliper at very reasonable cost and today, I actually had a chance to fit it.
Job didn't start brilliantly well, because the slider on the new caliper was seized in the caliper. And the allen recess was entirely rounded. I battled with it for a short while before realising I could just remove the caliper over the slider...
This done, I then had the tricky job of removing the slider boots from the old caliper to fit to the new one. Yes, I'd already managed to tear one of the boots on the 'old' caliper (I could cry) but they were still better than what was on the new one. That job proceeded pretty well. Pleasing.
But this job has been a fight all the way from when I started it many, many weeks ago. Sure enough, the piston in the new caliper would not wind back. At all. Brute force got it to move about quarter of a turn, but it wasn't going any further. So, connect up to the car, use hydraulic pressure to force the piston out and see what the problem is. I've no idea what the problem is. I cleaned the piston (no damage on the sliding section) and inspected its rear end and the screw. Couldn't see anything wrong at all. Refitted it and BLISS - it wound back in sweetly.
Pads back in, system bled, connected up the parking brake cable, gave the foot pedal a good shove and adjusted the parking brake. Park brake pedal now nice and firm for the first time ever! A test revealed I could actually stop the car with the parking brake. Ye gads! Novelty!
I then had a good look at the brake pipe that runs across the front subframe. When under the car at Tony Weston's before Christmas, that pipe had looked incredibly ropey. It didn't seem that bad today, so perhaps it was a trick of the light. I rubbed it down (and the front subframe front edge in the end) and applied anti-corrosion wax. Hopefully she'll now behave properly at the imminent MOT.
So thanks for various assistance with this job. There have been parts contributed as well as essential information.

Bah. Failed on nearside sill rot (the usual jacking mess at the leading edge, has been steadily getting worse but was done some time ago) and a split steering rack gaiter. I did cause the tester some concern as I managed to spill LHM down the back of the brake when I was bleeding it yesterday. Probably why there was a slight imbalance on the brake test. However, the parking brake was spot on! Hoorah! I've left it with them to sort out and retest as I'm meant to be going away in it this weekend, and have too much work to do to sort it myself.

Additional - the tester did notice that the engine sump gasket appears to be leaking. A service is due so I s'pose I should take the opportunity to replace it. He also noticed a minor leak from the gearbox. I'm a bit baffled by this one, as the leak appeared to be on the bottom. I guess it's probably leaking from somewhere else and dribbling down though?
