Re: Vince's xm - Planned return to the road
Thanks. I can now find this on their UK website but I tried the US site first and they are very hush-hush about it.

Re: Vince's xm - Planned return to the road
A quick update on the xm MOT situation.....
What a pain in the rear its turning out to be !
The car finally went in yesterday for them to do what needs to be done on it pre MOT test, and we spent all day trying in vain to get the right inner cv boot for it. Honestly a complete fiasco as the citroen OE number on their site brings back a correct looking boot kit, but its length (or height) is too short by approx 10mm.
Being a person who doesn't give up on this kind of stuff I tried different model boot kits, for eg a 2.0 automatic application which the length was spot on, but then one of the inner diameters wasn't right. It got me thinking has this car got the wrong driveshaft fitted to it somehow along its life?
So in the end I told the garage to just fit the wrong one on it and seal it up as good as it will to get it off their ramp and ill have to tackle the problem again at a later date....ill probably have to order one from Citroen direct and check it against the old one before having it fitted...again.
Like I said...a pain in the rear....so it should be going in for test today...see what happens....Other than that, the garage seem to think everything else is ok, but TBH im not being bowled over by their service so far so who knows what level of commitment they are putting into it?

Re: Vince's xm - Planned return to the road
I fitted a new inner CV boot onto one of my Activa driveshafts the other day Vince. I used a 2.0 Auto one too. Whilst not perfectly sized, a few stern words and a cone saw it fitted and it seems OK.
Was that the only problem?

Is this the start of aftermarket parts for xm and xantia becoming rubbish again?

On S1 cars I think all driveshafts are the same Vince, although my V6 auto originally had some larger diameter shafts fitted that I obtained secondhand. I was very sorry to hear you are having such problems! With regards, Matthew T.

I think XM drive shaft outers changed from solid bar to larger diameter hollow tube 1996/7.
Because it does not affect the shaft fixing points I think the shafts are interchangable.
Has a major effect on gaiter small end sizes though.

Same applies to the big engined Xantias. They are fully interchangeable as I have... My Activa came in at the end of solid shafts...xmexclusive wrote:I think XM drive shaft outers changed from solid bar to larger diameter hollow tube 1996/7.

Re: Vince's xm - Planned return to the road
Well its all resolved
Jim yes that's been the only issue really. The garage have finished it now, they ended up using a Renault cv boot on it as they had some in stock being Renault specialists...it fitted perfectly over the one I asked them to fit, so the good news is it wont need to be replaced again
The only other jobs they have done is the earth on the rear brake light which they claim to have fixed (I haven't got the car back yet) but they do recommend I get a replacement bulb holder as in their opinion it looks like its burning out. IIRC it looked fine to me...
And to fit a gasket inbetween the middle and rear exhaust section. I had that in the boot, but TBH it was too hard to fit on my own as the exhaust was so heavy to keep in place whilst I tightened up the clamp. Its ideally a 2 person job. I lost patience with it and left it out
But,.....they said that everything else they think is bob on
In a slight change of plan, they aren't going to MOT it for me as they aren't an MOT garage. So im thinking, do I leave it in Bolton and get it MOT'd (which I think I might) or bring it home again and park it up....
My concern with the latter is although the garage feel everything is now MOT ready, they aren't testers so haven't checked the beam alignment and solidity of all relevant structure points.
What to do?.....

Re: Vince's xm - Planned return to the road
Just get it MOT'd so you'll be able to enjoy it more. Of the pics I remember of your car there couldn't be any structural problems or you would have seen them. The headlights are so easily adjustable with those 2 knobs on top, you can angle it up or down in a second, literally. If the MOT guy isn't willing to do so, he is a total waste of the planet
So I would just go for it. As for the brakes, just drive it safely and use the brakes hard a good few times to clear all rust and dirt, before you go to the test.Good luck!

Search online as plenty of places do cheap MOTs so book it in and just go sit with it
