Good point Paul :D I won't be now...

25 years. Doesn't seem possible. If the government hadn’t scrapped the rolling exemption the earliest XMs would now qualify for free VED...

thats exactley why they did pause it! Look at all those cars still about up to G reg 1989 that they would be loosing out on revenue with! Petrol would be 5 pound a litre to compensate

They must be hugely loosing out on revenue now though Paul from these new low emission vehicles. next door has just got a new Skoda Octavia (big car - Xantia sized) and that's free VED. I was shocked to discover that. It's a 1.6 diesel and according to the owner it 'goes OK'..

I wonder how long this state of affairs can go on before something really gives and they have to take a fresh look at VED. If they can do a big car like that free it must mean that soon all new cars will be either free or very cheap. I guess we in our £225 a year cars are subsidising them..

If its brand NEW jim, first year road tax is free I think on almost all cars..

My brother has a 61 plate Audi A3 2.0 TDi 6 speed, the first year was free, but now his is ONLY £30 A YEAR! Thats as good as a 1.4 C2 HDi, I know what Id rather have!

The Cobalt one lives outside so I make sure I use it as a second car, the Mandarin one lives in the garage so only comes out on dry days in the Winter, unless absolutely necessary.

Never realised the first year was free Paul... £30 a year for a 2 litre car is still silly cheap though. Personally I'd rather pay the £225 and have comfort and style.

I rarely ride in a non hydro-pneumatic car these days but when I do I'm horrified. Robyn's 207 has springs but they seem largely ornamental as they contribute nothing to the suspension at all. It has a most awfully hard and uncompromising ride. bad enough to rattle fillings out of your teeth...

Jaap, happy days indeed :D

Will, that's what I badly need - a garage that can accommodate a car...

I knew you would change your mind Jim....It's too good to get rid of! Excellent descion!! :D how could you not have one for next year...

Going back to the VED thing.....makes me hopping, and I don't think its sustainable. All these new cars with zero tax, will have to pay tax in the end. Otherwise everyone with a new car..... electric or combustion... will end up paying nothing. Every year car manufacturers bring out cleaner cars with evermore lower co2 outputs. The road tax should be about road use and those who use them, pay for them. I still can't believe all that revenue still doesn't go back into the road network where it should be going.
The whole system is wrong. Cars should not be taxed on Co2 emissions. and I believe they have admitted that, but have no idea how to change it. Idiots!
£225 for an Xm is stupid. And why they can justify putting it up every year...again cannot be sustainable surely. A huge overhaul is needed...but will it happen...no.

End of vent!! you can tell who has to buy car tax this month!!!
