Re: CitroJim's ES9 V6 Exclusive

I've been mulling something over for a while now and that's to reduce down to just two cars. I can't justify three any longer on cost and time grounds amongst other reasons and after much deliberation it's the XM that has to go. The two Xantias I've had a long time and those are the ones that are staying and in truth the cars I'm most attached to.

As is say, the decision has been made after weeks, nay months, of agonising and finally, for better or worse, that decision is now finally made.

On the time front I just don't have the time now to devote to cars or the forums as much as I'd like. I'm gradually moving into other things and those are taking much time.

Money wise, I'll shortly have two daughters at University... I also have no intention of returning to work full-time even though my improving health is likely to permit it in the not too-distant future.

That the XM has rust made the decision a little easier as that aspect of the XM is causing me considerable stress and worry about seeing it fixed and through the next MOT. As soon as something causes me stress then basically now, that's it. It goes. It's possibly not a biggie but it is to me. I don't really 'do' bodywork and can't really see it as a skill I'm ever likely to become proficient in. Being heavily allergic to all kinds of solvent-based paints and coatings doesn't help either!

Anyway, I'm open to sensible offers for the XM. If it doesn't sell through here I'll be dropping it on the 'bay..

It's just been serviced and bar the rust it's pretty much spot-on in all other respects.

It'll be a shame to see the XM go as it's a lovely car and maybe one day if I can find a truly rust-free example I may once again have one.

On the personal front, all remains good and yesterday I did a job that's been waiting for me to be well enough for perhaps two years or more. I've go all three of my old clocks working again :-D That took a bit of work and I still need to do a bit more. The two grandfather clocks are currently strung with strimmer line in place to the proper cat-gut so I must now go and find a source of the proper stuff as I'm told the strimmer line is abrasive and wears the winding barrels.

Not allowed!

Sorry to hear that Jim, but you have clearly thought it through. Is it the typical sill rust issue. I am sure I remember you saying it was starting to go on one side. But nothing to serious I hope.

So what price are you after? ....just out of interest of course!!! :D

I don't know Russ... I'm open to offers from good homes only!

Yes, just the normal sill rust as far as I can tell. Paul has looked at it so he can perhaps say more.

I drove it to Aylesbury yesterday. It's going to be a hard job letting it go but I must down to two cars.

Yesterday at Aylesbury we've been given objectives to complete as part of our therapy. they must be SMART (i.e. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-based as well as being related to our major reason for being on the course.

As I said one of mine was to be able to do more in the workshop it seemed only right to rebuild the spare 4HP20 gearbox I have. It can be a very SMART objective. First task to be completed by next Tuesday is to clean and prepare it for disassembly!

I shall report progress here...

And now as they say, for something completely different...

Yesterday I was a bit (a lot actually) tired but that was perhaps due to a long battle Chris570 and I had with the rear brakes of a certain C4. What should have been a half hour job to change disks and pads turned out to be a most difficult and time-consuming dockyard job imaginable and it even involved me making up a bespoke piston wind-back tool... All this after a long and hard day at work.

I must say I did enjoy the work immensely and was delighted at how much I did :-D

It was a good test for me as Chris and I worked until 9PM on it. I did feel a bit washed out yesterday but (and don't take this the wrong way) when Chris told me he was pretty well washed-out too I was rather happy as it is perhaps another indication I'm on the mend :-D

At this rate I might be good to return to full-time work but I've already decided that's not happening..

Today I'm absolutely fine. Up at 04:15. Lots of posting on the forums, a loaf baked, 45 minutes of hard swimming, 10 minutes on the cross trainer with the tension turned up to 11, baked a batch of chocolate and walnut brownies, baked a parkin and well on the way to cooking a lamb hotpot for Robyn's and my dinner this evening...

I'm pleased with my second attempt at a parkin. The first one sank but tasted ace and this one has sunk a bit but nothing like as much as the first one. I think I know what to do for the third time so it doesn't sink at all.

Parkin is lovely - it looks like black pudding but is totally veggie and a delicious way of getting your oats... I believe it's a Yorkshire delicacy...

This afternoon I shall start my gearbox objective..

There's very very very little people that get up at 4.15 AM Jim. (unless they really have to..)

7-8 hours sleep is essential for us humans.

4.15 AM is just way too early. I would consider that a real problem. Even most Americans would agree (they get up extremely early cause of the high temperatures during the day) Sleep is very important and everyone telling me, getting up at that time of night as normal, I would have problems with. :)

Are you saying I'm not human Jaap?    You think I'm a Vulcan or something? I have red blood you know

I do get my 6-7 hours a night but I'm time-shifted. I'm in bed by 9 and that's a late night for me... I've been like it for so long now that a chat with a sleep clinic suggests it's now impossible for me to ever again be normal :( Ahh well...

Even if I go to bed late (say 10 or 11 if I can stay awake that long) I still wake up as bright as a button around 4 and if I try to sleep in I wake up feeling dreadful...

That's why I hardly ever post on the forums in the late evening.

I must say the best time of day for me is very early in the morning... It's when I'm brightest and when my brain works a little.

In other news I've received the new gut-lines for the clocks along with a bottle of clock oil. Litre for litre it's more expensive than LT71141 but luckily the clocks only use drops of it very occasionally :-D

Restringing them with the new catgut is a job for another time. It'll be good to finally loose the bright blue strimmer line currently in use and replace it with something both more in keeping with 200 years old clocks and something entirely natural. That should then see the clocks good for the next 25 years at least.

Good service from the only supplier I could find in the UK. Ordered Monday and turned up today :-D catgut is expensive. Well over £30 for the amount needed. And to think I could have supplied my own donor cat too

Live long and prosper is what I say!! :)

And set your clock the way you want.
Best I ever read, is get rid of the dials and clock mechanism and replace with a hand made 'NOW' sign.
I rest my case :) but don't tell Liz (or anybody else to get up at 4.15! :(

Without a doubt Jim. Three or Four o'clock in the morning, not a soul around but badgers, foxes, bunny rabbits and the dicky birds. None of them stupid bloody humans to ruin the day before it's started.

Six hours sleep is the norm, but can get by on four - eight hours is just a pipe-dream. Such is life.

I used to only get 4-6hrs most nights and just stay flexible with my sleep routine as it took me 2yrs now to get out of the dam early morning wake ups as it drove me nuts on a weekend or day off :(

Jim, Don't open the oven door to look at the parkin or it will sink. leave it until its ready then take it out.
