Mandatory Insurance

Post by xmexclusive » Mon Jan 10, 2011 7:19 pm

Been browsing through the write ups on the imminent change to the car insurance rules.
Renew the insurance or declare SORN is the main point of the change.
There is though a very worrying added comment in the blurb.
It claimed that it also gave powers to sieze and crush non compliant cars even on private land.
The words used were "declare SORN and shut the car away".
This may just be jouralistic scaremongering but it implies that SORN on your front driveway is not acceptable.
How about SORN at a private location that does not have planning consent for car storage.
Many of us have found odd corners to keep off road cars.
Do we now need to make regular site visits to check that the cars do not have enforcement notices.
Is this actually a back door way of dramatically reducing the population of old cars.
Anyone any thoughts or detailed info.

I think its more for cars ON THE ROAD from how I understood it John..

Its a case of if the car is off the road With NO Sorn then its a different story.

From what I heard they want to crack down on un-insured drivers on the road.. The cars already SORN are fine.. anyway.. ALL mine are SORN'd

Paul

EDIT: Just wanted to add this MUST BE SORN to be SAFE

Hi Paul

That is what I thought but the powers allow seizure from private land.
They also appear to require a SORN vehicle to be shut away.
I am seriously considering moving my insurance to Primo and adding the SORN cars to the listed cars.
It was something I had discussed with them when they quoted last year.
At the time I wanted their quote for SORN car cover for single trip for MOT and associated repair moves.

I can't see why SORN cars would need to be shut away, many people don't have garages. Maybe it's just advice incase the SORN lapses, so the car can't be taken.

Paul.
I don't think that BX strut top has collapsed, it looks like it has ripped away due to heavy accident impact. It still has the baseplate attached.

I believe it to be unsorned cars that are uninsured are liable for prosecution. I have my sorned cars on fire and theft only cover on my insurance, its less than a tenner a year each car.

Robert how do you insure your unused cars so cheaply? i have been looking about for insurance for the Activa and its £450 ish fully comp, and about £650 for both cars on a multicar policy which is a bit steep i think considering i can only drive one at a time :?
I think i will take turns having them on the road but if i can insure the unused one against fire and theft that would be more comforting.

I suppose its a kind of storage insurance. I got a good quote for classic insurance at the end of the summer. Hopefully it is still good when I go to enquire about it in spring.

It would be nice for a change if they decided to legislate to make the insurers a whole heap more transparent. Motor insurance strikes me as a devious, cynical business which we are compelled to keep feeding, by law. The anomalies and huge differences in their quotes lust convinces me every time they are, for the most part, a bunch of charlatans.
