Tax, insurance and MOT...
Nice item to be left, are you intending to keep it?
You will probably find the suspension spheres have lost their gas so the ride will be very firm. Perform a bounce test: with the engine running push down and pull up on each bumper in turn. There should be considerable movement, especially at the rear.

Great to have such a thing 'to be left with'
. I have driven since 2003 non-stop XM, with only 3 months also having a Daewoo Matiz that was ASAP replaced by a second XMM, so both my wife had an XM for daily use

Hi I have a set of trade plates to recover it I will check the suspension spheres when if I get back I can put up with a bumpy ride as 90% will be motorway also due to the impending weather forecast I am taking a new set of wiper blades.I have put 25ltr of e5 fuel and I believe it should have been e5 38 ron so i am adding another 25ltr of that to the tank hope it will not hurt to much the big day is this Friday so keep an eye on M4 hold ups

Made it back to Swindon started off 50-60 mph steady ride apart from vibration throughout the vehicle stopped at services all looked good sped up to 7pm rest of the way the vibration increased.put it on a ramp Saturday small leak from hydraulic valve bolted to font of gearbox all the tyres squared off causing the vibration disc font and surprisingly clean with new pads front no signs of rust in all the main areas.started the clean up signs of mould on dash-seat belts-basically all the plastic trim cleaned using auto glym interior cleaner luckily I found the radio code no remote key found so am using key 1 and 2 key two opens the central door locks but is temperamental no key code found so may have a problem there as it is so good condition I have insured it new tyres next week and put in for MOT

Damn. We were hoping to hear the M4 was closed due to strange alien spaceship blocking it.
To be honest, it sounds fairly normal for an Xm pressed back into service, a previously well looked after example can take a journey with no work at all.
The minor leak sounds like the Flow Distribution Valve (FDV), or possibly pressure regulator needs new O rings.
How supple is the suspension?
Is this going up for sale soon, or to be kept by you?

Re: New to Citroen xm
The car belonged to my late father I do not think he ever drove as he bought it in 2000 nds and was left in his garage my brother looked after mum and dad and told me he loved the car but never got it on the road up to his death four years ago I would like to drive it for a bit then decide wether to sell it as at present I have seven vehicles on the road and can only drive one at a time my favorite is a P100 sierra based pick up made in 1991 with tail lift and crane fitted in the bed .going back to your sugggestion that it could be FDV or presure valve the leak appears to come from a centrol bolt in the end of a round cylinder fixing it to a plate securing said cylinder to the gearbox bell housing area so you are probibly right I will further investigate Tuesday .The suspension is not as light to push and rebound as you have said so I may have to further my investigation of the fact that it may need new spheres fitted as I have not got a vehicle to compare it

The round part with the centre bolt is the pressure regulator. You may find the centre bolt is loose allowing the base-plate to move as the regulator cuts in and out, but it probably needs new O rings.
It's an easy job to do all the O rings on the regulator.
This linked to post shows how to reseal a pressure regulator. The original post lost it's images, but they are attached to this one.

A P100 is pretty useful as long as it doesn't rust to bits, or the engine break. Someone I know had one, rust was an issue, the crankshaft snapping was terminal.
It's probably worth you sticking with the Xm for a bit, they really are unique and grow on you. A 1992, Xm 2 litre should float like nothing you have ever been in, yet offer taught handling due to the Hydractive system.
