I think it is staying black Russ on account of the engine bay, although I think Will would prefer Mandarin! The restoration certainly looked impressive and apart from the paint there is just the engine to polish! With regards, Matthew T.

On reflection, the colour scheme is pretty much 2CV Charleston...

Will it be more economical with 4 injectors disconnected?

Was good to chat to you Matthew.
If you do remember where you bought the ball for the gearbox linkage please let me know. I had a look online but haven't found anything suitable yet.

OT.

Would a bonnet/tailgate gas strut ball be the same size, alternatively any gearbox ball-joint, All linkage controlled XM gearboxes are either BE3 or ME5T, which I believe are all the same ball joints.

Alternatively...

Thank you Dieselman. Funnily enough thats exactly what I've just bought.
The next problem is how to get it in there. Not exactly much room to get a drill in.

It was good to hear you have found a suitable part Paul and I seem to remember using a piece of broken off file to enlarge the existing hole on my 2.0i turbo! With regards, Matthew T.

Theoretically, that lever unbolts from the selector shaft. Remove the inner wheel-arch liner to gain access.

That is the same ball that fell out on Vince's high mileage diesel on his way to Burghley house rally. A couple of tye- wraps saw him not only to the rally, but back home to Manchester.
That ball is a press fit /riveted union, so a dab of weld fixed it in place, but if the arm can't be removed, try a small carbide burr on a flexible drill drive, or remove the driveshaft.
You only need to remove enough of the splayed riveted end to remove the ball.
Tapping a thread and using a locknut should give a good and serviceable fix.

Managed to fix it. Thanks for your help chaps.
I should really start a project thread for it.
