I think the same car was advertised (in similar condition) a year or two ago.  I think that it is odd that someone would remove the cylinder head and not refit it unless they suspect a more serious problem.

I think the fact it ran great but the all time great fix of a bit of black insulating tape over the engine EML is a bit of a contradiction to this statement.
The only reason you would buy the gasket, take the head off and stop is if they either did not find a problem or disturbed the liners which is easily done!
