I suspect they are all cosmetic, without testing I wouldn't know.
My point was they cosmetically Series 1 spoilers don't work on Series 2 cars.  The "shopping trolley" spoiler was a late 1980's design item and the rest of the cars styling has to suit.  A series 2 car...especially with those awful wheel trims, doesn't have the look.
 
Now you mention it and when I look back at the picture I see your point, the S1 spoiler looks wrong on the S2. I always lamented the loss of the spoiler on the S2 but now seeing it I can see why. What I can’t work out is, what’s the difference from the rear is. The body is as far as I can see the same as the S1 except for the swirly Xm font. 
It maybe seems maybe a little too high up as on the S1 it seems to hug the body more.

			All seems a little too pedantic to me. 
Quite a few people like the series 1 appearance so swap nose cone and spoiler on their series 2.
Low spec series 2 cars in Europe were supplied with no rear spoiler.
