If the pump body is plastic it will be the later type with the larger wheel Peter and I am fairly sure this is the belt you need:

If the pump body is metal you will need the slightly shorter belt, which is this one Peter:

Please let us know the registration year of the car and that will enable a definite match.

Matthew T.

^ The reg was all we need.

VIN: VF7Y3AG0001AG****

The all important Rp number is 4854 which gives a build date of 22 February 1990. This number is painted on the front passenger door A post by the check strap.

Registered 26/03/1991.

Later pump pulleys have a 100mm pulley, early ones were 86mm, which is even higher geared, so slips the belt more. The change point is RP 5566, so your car probably has the smaller pulley, making belt slip even more likely. Shorter belts for the smaller pulley are 650mm, longer ones are 670mm. Don't fit a longer 700mm belt, they will slip readily as you run out of tensioner adjustment.
Go for an XPZ belt as they are heavier duty and have a higher operating temperature. They are widely available.

As said, as long as the belt tensioner bolt is in place and complete, it won't need replacing. Without the tensioner bolt you just can't get enough tension on the belt for effective drive.

I knew it had to be an early car being in memphis blue. I really like these early cars, they are the best styled XM. Single spoke wheel (possibly red badge), rotary lights switch, grey exterior trim, itallia wheels, no interior wood, multipoint earthing connectors on the inner wings...
If you ever decide to give up on this car, please offer it here first...

Looking forward to the pictures! Even ones with the moss growing on it. Maybe do a before and after shoot?
How many miles has the car done?

Hello Peter

Welcome to the forum, lovely story to go with a pretty rare early car with nearly no miles on it.
I'm not sure why the pump would seize, seems very unlikely. It does sound like a belt issue but if you do need a new pump it may be worth speaking to Pleiades and getting yours refurbished and fitted with a larger pulley if you need to go down that route.

If you are fairly practical then people here are more than willing to guide you through any diagnosis and repair to help you get the car going again.

Also interested to see some pictures, there are not many of these left and it could be the lowest mileage PRV6 in the UK and in a very nice and rare colour.

One more welcome, Peter. I always liked Moss Green as a car colour (our ZX was more-or-less that). Lots of photos, please!

I agree with Will that the early cars are the best and especially with a V6 and sei trim! In relationship to manual vs auto V6, I just cannot decide myself and love them both, hence my collection I guess, although if I was forced to choose one it would probably be the auto. Based on the RP number given, Pete's car was produced slightly before my two earlier rhd cars, but registered later as seemed to happen with many XM. There is more than a year between production and hitting the road, probably due to sitting in a dealership unsold and I note the registration area is London. As an early 1990 production model it will definitely have the exterior grey plastic trim and Italia alloys and all-black interior and red badge steering wheel. I also do like Memphis blue and the last car I broke was a 1991 auto in that colour. The mileage is indeed low and my 1992 model might come in second at around 75K! With regards, Matthew T.
