So my car should have V6-24V alloys? What are they like?

I now ask them to check the wheel balance without tyre first.
John makes a good point.
Last time I had Monte Carlos re-tyred and balanced down here, the (Euromaster) guy removed the old tyre and weights, fitted the wheel to the jig (with the special centreless adaptor), and then spun up the empty rim. This read 0-0 on the machine, and he was happy that the empty wheel was properly mounted. He also checked that the rim was rotating without visible run-out.
Then the tyre went on, and was balanced, with appropriate weights.
This suggested he knew what he was doing (in getting the centreless adaptor correctly mounted).
Presumably it's a fair assumption that a naked rim will be balanced, ex-factory.

I don't think anyone in the UK ever did all this (ATS included), although perhaps I was just lucky in almost never having had a mis-balanced wheel.

From what I remember about the centreless adaptor, and watching it being fitted, there did seem a good bit of scope for not mounting it perfectly: rather a lot of movable parts.

When getting any wheel+tyre balanced, it's a good idea to take a shooftie at the tyre periphery (tread centre) during the balancing procedure. If there is anything more than minute visible radial run-out, the tyre is oval (or badly fitted), and should be refused. It's quite possible to balance an oval tyre, but the ride will remain oval. Cheap tyres more likely to suffer than main-brand, is what the fitters say.

Hi fakeconcern

You may have the correct wheels.
I quoted "Model Year" dates so 1995 MY runs from July 1994 to June 1995.
Date is build date not registration date.
Build date (ORGA number) is painted between the hinges on the passenger front door pillar.
There is a posting on here with photos of the XM wheel types.

John

I think John is probably correct about the Monte Carlo wheels being original although it must be right on the cusp. Here is a shot of one of my cars with the 24v alloys which I also personally prefer! Regards, Matthew T.

Thanks again to everyone for the informative replies, makes me feel at home before I even have the car.
The info about centreless wheels and fitting is something to bear in mind, I doubt my favourite tyre place has the adapter.
As I don't have the car home yet, I don't know the registration date or build date so I' ll be interested to look that up when I get it & see which wheels should be on it (still like the wobbly ones most though!). MTXM, you have a lovely looking XM in an unusual subtle colour & I must say those wheels really suit it as well. Grrr now I want different wheel & I haven't even got it home yet!

That's interesting, didn't know the date of reg was on DVLA enquiries.
You notice that Franklin has got a new MOT without being asked, what great service from him! It passed first time with no advisories, which has to be good!

I don't suppose that tells us which wheels it should have does it?

"I don't suppose that tells us which wheels it should have does it?"

No, but the VIN number fed into Service Citroen would tell you what was factory fitted, wheel-wise and everything else.

Looks lovely!

Not my problem, I assumed Franklin had it on a dealer retention? I don't know quite how these things work.

Again I must wait until the weekend.
