/\ What dieselman said! The rubber part found it's way up to the camshaft pulley and slipped the timing out. The worrying thing is that the last time I looked at it (when replacing the aux belt not more than 15K before) I didn't notice anything wrong with the pulley - not that I was looking closely - but I am fairly observant and methodical. Not only did it look fine but when it failed, it did so with no warning at all.

So even though my friend says his was ok, I'm going to replace it anyway!

edit: Yes Paul, I finally made it here - thanks for the prod  ;) Glad you got back ok yesterday, thanks for the email!

Is that what they call it! I would describe it as a dual mass crankshaft pully :D The only one I have ever had fail had done around 250,000 miles - which I didn't think was bad.

i can tell you whats better than that, a solid pulley, they last forever and its what ive had to put on the xm today, along with a new engine mount and belts.
Oh and its officialy still too cold to be working on cars :D

I don't think they do for the diesels, but given that diesels, including the Xantia, always used solid pulleys I wonder if a fix for one with the rubber delamination would be to drill the pulley from front to rear through the rubber ring, tap a thread and screw in 3 equidistant grub screws to lock the pulley together.

Could be done I would think but given the failure rate I have experienced and the fact that I have several in stock, from my point of view probably not worthwhile.

i thought the earlier dervs used solid pulleys and then went to the harmonic type pulley like the petrol engines did? cant see they make any real difference tbh.
