Hi Dieselman

That makes sense.
My experience of Vacuum cruise components dates from nearly 20 years ago.
So no idea what the cruise ECU connector looks like.
Would have assumed the Citroen connector rule applied - no identical ones capable of being mixed.

Looks like cost cutting...use universal connectors, not individually keyed.

Double injection relay.

After a fail this morning I said to myself....bugger this and walked up the hill to see a friend (truck mechanic) to borrow a good strong battery in a final effort before stripping things down to check from the bottom up.

I attached the 150amp/h Volvo truck battery.............The engine FIRED UP
The engine FIRED UP
The engine FIRED UP
The engine FIRED UP

My thanks to ALL who have assisted so much !!!

The power of a good battery! Well done.

So, apart from using a decent battery, what else have you done?
- Did you need to put the Inj Relay and Cruise Relays in their correct sockets, or were they already there?
- Did you check out your main battery connections, and/or renew them?
- Any other tweaks or changes?

Will the car now start on your own battery/batteries?

Trouble is, without knowing exactly what cured the fault, the car could leave you stranded again.

When you successfully started with the big truck battery, did you use jump leads?
Was the car's own battery still in place and connected?
What were the jump leads connected to on the car - the battery connectors, or somewhere else?

Excellent.

I knew you were going to be choking on diesel smoke today.

If you removed the car battery and connected the lorry battery, it would point towards the battery cable connections being poor contact in the battery clamps.

At least, you now know it's mechanically fixed.

I switched the Inj Relay plug over with the CruseCtrl plug....( they sit NEXT to each other and are Identical ! ...well done Citroen)
Main battery connections are all good and flexible/make good earths.

The car still only starts on the Fly Lead

Battery was in the car connected normally, the truck battery Positive was attached with very good jump leads to Positive on the car and the negative connected to the engine block.

Just ran for a few seconds without inlet manifold etc....also no water in it at the moment....will button it up later and run it up for a bit.

I will now get onto finding the problem between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid....as noted in an earlier post my bet is a burn out at a connection/fusebox.

Does look like suspect battery connectors - If the original lead (Pb) lumps, best replaced with new brass ones.
Crazy that those identical relay sockets could be next to each other!
So, just the starter relay/solenoid/IGNsw to sort.

I've covered the starter circuit in an earlier post.

The starter trigger doesn't go through the fusebox, but the gearbox selector switch is fed from F19.

By connecting the lorry battery to the engine block you bypassed the car battery Gnd cable clamp, so may still find the battery cables to be an issue.

Link back to earlier post with starter relay circuit diagram.

Agree it won't be fuse box alasdair.. It will be one of..

Starter relay behind headlight..
Inhibitor switch on gearbox..
Or poor cable to the solinoid.. Corroded copper cables that vanish inside cable insulation. And therefore no connection. If you turn the key to start you should hear all the relays clicking on the fuse box that to I think reduce battery drain for full starting power.

You may need to run a new wire from starter to where ever the starter solinoid wire goes to..
