Hydractive addressed the issue of roll and wallow on earlier hydropneumatic Citroens, and offered for the first time both a soft ride and a firm one immediately on tap. Working as designed, a floaty XM can be thrown into a twisting manoeuvre with great confidence and control, without any active intervention by the driver.
BX illustrated the previous suspension "single choice" well: the supple ride of a non-sporty variant, or the much firmer ride of a GTi. You could have one or the other, but not both.
Interesting your comment about the C6 ride; have heard that more than once before. As time passed, Citroen ride did become firmer - maybe in response to road surfaces improving (UK being an exception?), but also to the sporty shift in styling. XM sits, I think, literally comfortably between the current low-profile, taut offerings and previous wafty Citroens. It's good to have the best of both in one system.
If you really wanted to sample a non-Hydractive XM, then with a bit of research and advice into sphere choice (capacity, damping and gas pressure), it would be possible. Simply 'switching off' isn't an option, as this leaves the system in Firm mode, for safety reasons.
Matthew here has experience of a soft and floaty XM, as he travelled across Europe with member Ray a year or so back in his "comfort sphere" XM.
