I have to just say just because the abs light is lit it DOES NOT mean the abs does not work and the abs cutting in at low speed will happen with either the abs light on or off if a fault is present.
It seems with Bendix at least sometimes if there is a signal abnormality from one or more sensors the ecu can think that a wheel is locked and tries to back off the brakes rather than turning itself off, this usualy happens just as you are coming to a stop.

That sounds like my problem, as the light is not on all the time but invariably comes up on a drive longer than 10 mins!
I have taken the mechanism out, but will try swapping switches from rear to front, if not one of my friends has suggested using aryldyte. more of an irreversible fix though.

As a test pull the ABS fuse and see if the brakes revert to normal operation.

my rear passenger window stuck in the down position a couple of monthes ago after o lot of swapping about of switches it turned out to be the center console switch causing the problem?? it must supply power to the door switch somehow?

It does, its connected in series with the door switch so you can isolate it against children :o
